Recapping last night’s games

The six Tier 1 teams who are competing for the GNASH Cup have two records next to their score: their second half record, and their GNASH Cup record. If a team has an asterisk (*) next to their GNASH Cup record, it means that they have been eliminated from GNASH Cup contention.

USN-BA-Nashville Christian-FRA-Goodpasture 7 (2-3-0), Independence-Ravenwood 2 1 (0-4-0)
Ryan Barrett scored the game’s first goal on a power play with 28 seconds left in the first period, and it was 1-0 USN after one. Bryce Akright made it 2-0 just 59 seconds into the second, with Carson Denning extending the lead to 3-0 3:01 after that. It remained 3-0 until the final minute of the second, when Ryan Hoverson scored Indy’s only goal; just 31 seconds later, Vasili Santas scored his first goal of the season, and USN’s lead was 4-1 after two. Josh Peffer scored his first GNASH goal just 28 seconds into the third, and Michael McEver scored his first just under three minutes after that. It looked like the game would finish 6-1, but Santas added a second with just one second left. This is probably USN’s best result of the season outside of the win against Brentwood on November 15. Unfortunately for them, they only have two games left, and the likelihood of being the Hine Cup’s 1 seed is scant at this point.

Next game for both teams
USN-BA-Nashville Christian-FRA-Goodpasture: Tomorrow vs. Rutherford Rampage - 7:10 PM @ Centennial A
Independence-Ravenwood 2: Tomorrow vs. Station Camp-Liberty Creek - 9:15 PM @ Antioch-North

Mt. Juliet-Wilson Central-Green Hill 3 (2-1-1, 4-5-2*), Father Ryan 2 (2-2-0, 5-6-0*)
No goals were scored in the first period. Jordan Antar scored the game’s opening goal nearly four minutes into the second, with Austin Hester tying the game just over three minutes later, and it was 1-1 after two. Colin Sullivan gave the Irish a 2-1 lead just 46 seconds into the third, only for Trenten Gorrell to tie the game 2:07 later. Carson Slocum scored the game-winning goal with just under 2:30 to go on the power play. The result eliminates Father Ryan from GNASH Cup contention. It also means that both regular season meetings between the two end in the exact same score.

Both teams will resume the season in January.

Pope Prep-MLK-GCA 7 (2-1-0, 5-5-0), Ravenwood 2 (0-4-0, 3-8-0*)
Jake Farrell scored the game’s first goal just past the halfway point of the first, but the Knights got two very late goals from Saxon Clements and Erik Kihlberg, and had a 2-1 lead after one. Just past the halfway point of the second, Luke Pierce tied the game up on the power play, only for Jacob Sullivan to score the game-winner just under two minutes later. Jack Davis scored on the power play with just 37 seconds left in the second, and Pope had a 4-2 lead after two. They seized the game in the third: Clements scored a second just 2:01 in, with Reese Davidson chipping in a goal just 33 seconds later, and Sullivan scored a second with just over two minutes to go. Ravenwood will finish both halves of the regular season and the regular season as a whole under .500.

Pope Prep-MLK-GCA: TBA, sometime in January
Ravenwood: Tomorrow vs. Summit-Page - 7:30 PM @ Antioch-North

Summit-Page 7 (2-1-0), Montgomery Bell 1 (0-1-3, 6-1-4)
Hunter Wieck got the night off in goal for the Big Red. That was the difference here. Aiden Becker started in goal for MBA. Abe Lasher scored the opening goal just 65 seconds in, when he shot the puck into the roof of the net from the left point. Summit needed a few minutes to warm up, and tied the game just past the halfway point of the first, when Cody Lightfoot slid the puck into the bottom corner of the right-hand side of the MBA net off of a faceoff. Just under two minutes later, Zach Ellis scored the game-winning goal, zipping past MBA defenders, and backhanding the puck into the roof of the net. With two minutes left in the first, Sean Scott scored a weird goal, when he whiffed on a slapshot attempt in the left circle, only for the bottom of the stick blade to hit the top of the puck, and give it enough momentum to slide by Becker’s left skate blade into the bottom corner of the left-hand side of the net. It was 3-1 Summit after one, and that score held up through the second. Just past the halfway point of the second, Becker was replaced in goal by Mac McCrary, who is normally a skater for the varsity team. Just 78 seconds into the third, Ellis scored his second with a soft slaphot from the right half-wall that went into the roof of the net. Nearly five minutes later, Aiden Meyer got on the scoresheet, lifting a centering pass from Sean Scott over McCrary’s left leg and in. Ellis completed his hat trick just over a minute-and-a-half later, sniping a wrister from the right faceoff dot. Daniel Lawrence scored the game’s final goal on the Spartans’ only power play, when he one-timed a dropback pass from Meyer into the roof of the net from above the left circle.

This game showed how much MBA rely on Hunter Wieck. It’s a lot. Their lack of depth against a deeper team showed in this one. Now, if Franklin beat Ensworth tomorrow night, the Admirals will be one win away from the GNASH Cup when the season resumes next month. Summit goalie Seth Wagner deserves a lot of credit, too. He shook off the Lasher goal, which came on the game’s first shot, and made some really good saves on MBA’s best players, although, standing next to the MBA bench while calling the game, I could hear head coach JP Dumont telling his players to shoot more. They did, and Wagner made save-after-save.

Wanna know something crazy? One year ago TODAY, MBA had to play Mt. Juliet-Green Hill-Lebanon in Bellevue in a game where Hunter Wieck didn’t show up at all. The Big Red lost the game 5-2, and it was the difference in them losing the GNASH Cup to Ravenwood last year, as they missed out on it by a point.

Tennessee Outlaws 7 (3-1-0), Hendersonville-Beech-Gallatin 6 (1-2-0)
Merrick Mott scored the game’s first goal just 50 seconds in, then added a second just over two minutes later. Landon Croft made it 3-0 Commandos with just over four minutes left in the first, before Logan Wood scored twice in 17 seconds to get the Outlaws within 3-2 after one. Jacob Schenk tied the game at 3 just under two minutes into the second, but Braden Rose gave Hendersonville the lead back just 38 seconds later, and Gideon Drobnick extended it to 5-3 42 seconds after that. But the Outlaws would fight back, as Josh Kuehn pulled them back within one on a power play nearly three minutes after Drobnick’s tally. Then, Schenk tied the game with his second nearly four minutes later, and it was 5-5 after two. The score remained as such until the final three minutes of the game, and things got crazy. First, with just under three minutes to go, Schenk completed his hat trick. 70 seconds later, Croft scored his second goal, only for James Daniel to score the game-winner just 38 seconds later. The Outlaws are now in contention for a top seed for the Hine Cup, but I don’t think that they have a good enough team to be the 1 seed for a second straight year. As for Hendersonville, well, a seven-game unbeaten streak turned into a two-game losing streak like that.

Next game for both teams
Hendersonville-Beech-Gallatin: Tomorrow vs. Brentwood - 8:30 PM @ Centennial B
Tennessee Outlaws: TBA, sometime in January

Brentwood 6 (2-1-0), Station Camp-Liberty Creek 3 (1-3-0)
When I recap games I didn’t see, I give the goals in the order in which they happened. I actually watched the last few minutes of this game, and the goals aren’t in the right order on the box score on the GNASH website, so, I’ll just list who had how many. Trey Wilkins led all scorers with a hat trick, while Clayton Ellsworth had two goals of his own. Owen Seeley also scored for Brentwood. The Bison’s goals came from Mark White, Reese McCormick, and Joey Siciliano. Not a bad effort from Station Camp, honestly. They only had five fewer shots than the Bruins did. But Brentwood win another game that they absolutely should.
