Recapping last night’s games

For the teams who were eliminated last night, we have a section devoted to them called “Requiem for the eliminated” below the brackets.

Predators Cup first round games
Ensworth-Nolensville-Lipscomb 8, Mt. Juliet-Wilson Central-Green Hill 3
Logan Green scored the first goal of the game just over three minutes into the game, with JT Borland making it 2-0 Ensworth nearly three minutes later. With just under four minutes left in the first, Jordan Antar got the Bears on the board, only for Spencer Kern to answer for the Ice Tigers just over a minute-and-a-half later, and it was 3-1 Ensworth after one. Ensworth ran off with the game in the second, with four goals from Lucas Tarquine, Ben Sonkin, Jax Dooner, and Trex Hooper, meaning it was 7-1 after two. Borland scored Ensworth’s last goal in the third, while Antar scored twice in the final frame to complete a hat trick in a losing effort. A great start to the tournament for the Ice Tigers.

Next game for both teams
Mt. Juliet-Wilson Central-Green Hill: Tomorrow vs. Pope Prep-MLK-GCA @ 9:15 PM @ Antioch-North in an elimination game
Ensworth-Nolensville-Lipscomb: Tomorrow vs. Father Ryan @ 7:10 PM @ Centennial A in a Winners’ Bracket Semifinal

Father Ryan 2, Pope Prep-MLK-GCA 1 (OT)
Colin Sullivan scored the game’s first goal just before the halfway point of the first period, and the 1-0 lead for the Irish held up all the way towards the end of regulation, when Jacob Sullivan scored to tie the game with 38 seconds left in the third. Jacob Boron then scored the game-winner exactly a minute into overtime. Zach Fonnesbeck made 33 saves on 34 shots. The Irish only had 12 shots on goal. When Pope look back on this season, they will be furious about being swept by their biggest rival (this, of course, is accounting that they won’t see each other again this postseason).

Next game for both teams
Father Ryan: Tomorrow vs. Ensworth-Nolensville-Lipscomb @ 7:10 PM @ Centennial A in a Winners’ Bracket Semifinal
Pope Prep-MLK-GCA: Tomorrow vs. Mt. Juliet-Wilson Central-Green Hill @ 9:15 PM @ Antioch-North in an elimination game

Predators Cup Losers’ Bracket first round game
Franklin 6, Summit-Page 3
Franklin had a 4-0 lead after one period, thanks to goals from Will McCormick, Gavin Akers, Quinn Lohse, and MacLaine Butters. Summit got back within two in the second, with tallies from Zach Ellis and Aiden Garner, and it was 4-2 Admirals after two. Franklin crushed any comeback hopes in the third, with goals from Kasper Thuresson and Brandon Mills, with James Gilmartin scoring the final goal of his GNASH career with 73 seconds left to close things out. A great rebound for Franklin, but, can they keep it going? Meanwhile, a really rough ending to the season for Summit.

Next game for Franklin: February 21 vs. Father Ryan/Ensworth loser @ 8:30 PM @ Centennial B in a Losers’ Bracket Quarterfinal

Henry Hine Cup Winners’ Bracket Semifinals
Rutherford Rampage 5, USN-BA-Nashville Christian-FRA-Goodpasture 2
Ryan Barrett scored the game’s first goal just prior to the halfway point of the first, and USN led 1-0 after one. Near the halfway point of the second (and game), Kelvin McClendon scored to tie the game, with Carter Burnette-Vice giving the Rampage the lead just over a minute later. Nearly three minutes after that, Joey Fried tied the game, only for Burnette-Vice to score the winner just 15 seconds later, and the Rampage led 3-2 after two. Eddie Maze made it 4-2 with 2:30 to go in regulation, then scored an empty-netter 71 seconds later to seal the win.

Next game for both teams
USN-BA-Nashville Christian-FRA-Goodpasture: Tomorrow vs. Centennial @ 7:30 PM @ Antioch-North in a Losers’ Bracket Quarterfinal
Rutherford Rampage: February 21 vs. Hendersonville-Beech-Gallatin @ 9:15 PM @ Antioch-North in the Winners’ Bracket Final

Hendersonville-Beech-Gallatin 5, Tennessee Outlaws 3
Both goaltenders (Jackson Brodrick for Hendersonville, and Justin Iannucilli for the Outlaws) were brick walls in the first, neither one allowing a goal. The Outlaws broke the ice nearly two minutes into the second, when Jacob Schenk moved across the front of the Commandos net, and backhanded the puck in from the left-hand post. 50 seconds later, Dalton Alejandro scored shorthanded, when he tucked the puck into the right-hand side of the net after Brodrick pulled his right leg back, leaving enough space for the shot. Just past the halfway point of the second, Colin Smith put the Commandos on the board, firing the puck into the roof of the net from the left circle. 28 seconds later, Alejandro scored another goal, this time on the power play, shooting the puck under Brodrick’s right leg from the left circle. Just 23 seconds after that, Alex Williams pulled Hendersonville back within one, hammering a Colin Smith centering pass into the net from in front. With 49.6 seconds left in the period, Gideon Drobnick tied the game, burying the rebound from a saved Colin Smith shot, and it was 3-3 after two. Exactly two minutes into the third, Carter Morrison scored the winning goal, when his shot from the blue line ended up in the back of the net after deflecting off of an Outlaws stick. Merrick Mott scored the game’s final goal on the power play with just under three minutes to go. A great game for Hendersonville, who have beaten the 2 and 3 seeds to start off this Hine Cup. Now, can they beat the 1?

Next game for both teams
Hendersonville-Beech-Gallatin: February 21 vs. Rutherford Rampage @ 9:15 PM @ Antioch-North in the Winners’ Bracket Final
Tennessee Outlaws: Tomorrow vs. Brentwood @ 8:30 PM @ Centennial B in a Losers’ Bracket Quarterfinal

Henry Hine Cup Losers’ Bracket first round games
Brentwood 8, Independence-Ravenwood 2 2
Aidan Pustizzi had a hat trick, Trey Wilkins scored twice, and the other Bruins goals came from Jack Schultz, Ty Essenmacher, and Will Hubbard. Torrin Kemble and Landric Mayeski had the goals for Indy. For Kemble, it was a farewell goal, as his GNASH career ends. Not a surprising result, I hate to say.

Next game for Brentwood: Tomorrow vs. Tennessee Outlaws @ 8:30 PM @ Centennial B in a Losers’ Bracket Quarterfinal

Centennial 4, Station Camp-Liberty Creek 2
Rhett Gordon led the way with two goals, and Centennial’s other two came from Calvin Zacharias and Nick Claas. The Bison’s goals came from Tommy Siciliano and Mason Campbell. Terrific goaltending duel between David Busby and Carter Gilleece, the latter of whom was excellent against a constant Centennial attack, especially in the first, when shots came thick and fast. Good season for Station Camp; I think they’ll be very good next year.

Requiem for the eliminated

Independence-Ravenwood 2
Departing Seniors: Jax Greyson and Torrin Kemble
The fact that the Eagles made it to the ice at all this season is a miracle. They entered into a co-op with Ravenwood just to be able to have enough players to field a team this season. The question is, will Ravenwood need those players back (Ian Murray, Rishi Patel, and Colin Ramsour) in order to be able to ice a scholastic team next season? Time will tell. But Indy will very likely need to co-op with someone again next season to continue on. After next season, though, is where things get messy. If all of the Eagles players that were juniors return next year for their senior season, then Indy will have a class of nine seniors. If there isn’t a pipeline, Indy will definitely have to find somebody to partner with for 2025-26. Of course, this is all because there isn’t sufficient ice in Williamson County, and hasn’t been since A-Game. Hopefully, that big senior class will lead a much-improved Indy team.

Station Camp-Liberty Creek
Departing Seniors: Connor Jenne, Reese McCormick, and Sam Wiseman
The Bison improved greatly as the season wore on. The wins over USN and the Outlaws in the second half showed that. They’ll have an excellent senior class next year (it’ll also be a big one, ten strong), fronted by Joey Siciliano. But they have some very good underclassmen, especially Toby Mehaffey, and Carter Gilleece got better as the season went on. Watch out for the Bison in 2024-25.

Summit-Page
Departing Seniors: James Gilmartin, Preston Hart, Daniel Lawrence, Gavin Smith, and Cam White.
What a brutal end to the season for the Spartans, losing their last three games (dating back to their regular season finale against Ensworth on January 29). It looked like they would be a contender, but the Ravenwood loss really set them up for heartbreak. The losses of Gilmartin, Lawrence, and White will sting, but they’re bringing back a lot of good players next year, especially Zach Ellis, Aiden Garner, and Aiden Meyer. The program has a pipeline, thanks to many hockey families moving to College Grove from California, and enrolling their kids at Page. The future looks bright for this team.
