Recapping last night’s games

Predators Cup and Henry Hine Cup Winners’ Bracket Finals
Ensworth-Nolensville-Lipscomb 5, Montgomery Bell 1
No one scored in the first period. With just over four minutes left in the second period, Trex Hooper deflected a JT Borland one-timer past Hunter Wieck to give the Ice Tigers a 1-0 lead on a power play goal. 71 seconds later, Andrew Frech tied the game up, when his one-timer from the blue line deflected off of an Ensworth stick, and went in off of the inside of the left-hand post. 1:41 later, Ben Sonkin scored the winning goal when he fired a rocket past Wieck from the left half-wall of the MBA zone. With 36 seconds left in the second, Ensworth went up 3-1, when Lucas Tarquine scored against his old team after jamming the puck in on a netmouth scramble, and that was the score after two. Nearly four minutes into the third, Spencer Kern put the Ice Tigers up 4-1, when he fired the puck into the roof of the net from the bottom of the right circle. With just over four minutes left, the moment that defined the latter part of the game for MBA happened: Will Brothers innocently dumped the puck into the Big Red zone; Graeme Rutter picked it up at the right half-wall, and attempted to fire it around the boards to the far side by sending it past the net, only for it to go straight in. Brothers was credited with the goal. What a great game for the Ice Tigers. They absolutely have to be the favorites at this point.

Next game for both teams
Montgomery Bell: Next Wednesday vs. Ravenwood/Franklin winner @ 7:10 PM @ Centennial A in the Losers’ Bracket Final
Ensworth-Nolensville-Lipscomb: March 4 vs. either Montgomery Bell, Ravenwood, or Franklin @ 8:25 PM @ Bellevue-Crisp in the Predators Cup Final

Rutherford Rampage 6, Hendersonville-Beech-Gallatin 0
With just over five minutes left in the first, Justin Dickinson scored his first goal of the playoffs, when he hammered in a rebound from a saved Carter Burnette-Vice shot into the bottom corner of the left-hand side of the net. With 65 seconds left in the period, Dickinson was credited with a second goal, when he took a shot from the right circle that popped up into the air off of Commandos goalie Jackson Brodrick, which was knocked into the back of the net when Carter Morrison swatted the puck down to the ice with his left hand. 25 seconds later, Dickinson completed his hat trick, when he took a shot that rolled up Brodrick’s left arm, and dribbled over the goal line. It was 3-0 Rutherford after one. Near the halfway point of the second, Cody Jones made it 4-0, when he put a Kyle Wolfe centering pass into the back of the net. Just over six minutes later, Eddie Maze scored when he backhanded the puck past Brodrick from right in front. It was 5-0 Rampage after two. Brodrick was replaced in goal by Justin Smith for the third period. Nearly two minutes into the third, Dylan Welch scored the game’s last goal, when he buried a rebound from a saved William Haynes shot. It really feels like the Rampage are going to win the whole thing.

Next game for both teams
Hendersonville-Beech-Gallatin: Monday vs. Brentwood @ 6:45 PM @ Bellevue-Crisp in the Losers’ Bracket Final
Rutherford Rampage: Next Wednesday vs. the Hendersonville/Brentwood winner @ 7:10 PM @ Centennial A in the Henry Hine Cup Final

Predators Cup Losers’ Bracket Quarterfinals
Ravenwood 7, Pope Prep-MLK-GCA 4
The goals on the box score on the GNASH website must be in the wrong order, because I am told that Pope had a 4-2 lead at one point in this game. Liam Powell and Jack Ready each had a hat trick for the Raptors, with Jake Farrell cashing in the other goal. The Knights’ four goals each came from a different scorer: Nick Pellegrino, Clayton Roach, David Bavas, and Ian Sullivan. Sounds like a case of the defense letting Pope down. A bad, bad loss to end the season for them. Ravenwood keep surprising everyone this deep in the season, but I cannot see them getting any further after this.

Next game for Ravenwood: Monday vs. Franklin @ 8:25 PM @ Bellevue-Crisp in the Losers’ Bracket Semifinal

Franklin 4, Father Ryan 3
No goals were scored in the first period. Kasper Thuresson scored the game’s first goal 65 seconds into the second, only for Parker Causey to tie the game up just 76 seconds later. 2:30 later, Quinn Lohse put the Admirals back in the lead, only for Austin Hester to tie the game back up exactly five minutes later. Just over two minutes after Hester’s goal, Hudson Lohse scored, and Franklin were up 3-2 after two. Just past the halfway point of the third, Hester scored to tie the game up once more, only for Hudson Richards to score the game-winner just over a minute-and-a-half later. Franklin keep marching through the Losers’ Bracket while the other around them fall.

Next game for Franklin: Monday vs. Ravenwood @ 8:25 PM @ Bellevue-Crisp in the Losers’ Bracket Semifinal

Henry Hine Cup Losers’ Bracket Semifinal
Brentwood 4, USN-BA-Nashville Christian-FRA-Goodpasture 3 (shootout)
Aidan Pustizzi scored the game’s first goal with just over three minutes left in the first period, and the Bruins held a 1-0 lead after one. Just past the halfway point of the second, Ryan Barrett tied the game at 1-1, and Brody Wales gave USN a 2-1 lead heading into the third, scoring with 22 seconds left in the second period. Just past the halfway point of the third, Pustizzi tied the game up, then completed his hat trick 55 seconds later to give Brentwood the lead back. 74 seconds later, Barrett Teasdale tied the game up against his old team, and regulation finished with the game tied 3-3. No one scored in overtime, so, for the first time this entire postseason, we went to a shootout. Pustizzi and Clayton Ellsworth scored on the Bruins’ two attempts, while Payne Fielder stopped both of USN’s. The third time was the charm for Brentwood in figuring out Ben Schwarz. Their revenge tour through the Losers’ Bracket continues.

Requiem for the eliminated

Father Ryan
Departing Seniors: Jacob Boron, Colton Edwards, Austin Hester, Harper Howard, Carter Middleton, and Jack Sudderth
Ryan had a better season than the outlook promised; thanks to Zach Fonnesbeck, they were in games they wouldn’t have otherwise been in. But now, they have to move on from three really good players in Boron, Edwards, and Hester. They’ll bring back Colin Sullivan for one more year next season, but a lot of those players coming back are going to have to step up and lead the offense. They will absolutely have to bring in their own goaltenders next season, thanks to the fact that they have a JV program and a team in the middle school spring league. Unless, that is, they start up a co-op with Hume-Fogg, Fonnesbeck’s school; but, the Irish have enough numbers where they don’t need to co-op.

Pope Prep-MLK-GCA
Departing Seniors: Jack Davis, Nick Gentile, Erik Kihlberg, and Jacob Sullivan
Inconsistency was the boogeyman that continued to haunt the Knights this season; they’d get a big result one night (beating Franklin 5-0 on January 22), then squander it in the next game (losing 4-1 to MBA two nights later). The Knights were a very young team that jelled nicely as the season went on, but could never put things together at the right time. The losses of Isaac Rice and Cash Branyan, plus Carter Morrison transferring to Gallatin, all hurt. Having those three, or at least a combination of them, would’ve helped immensely. The Knights will still be a young team next year, and I don’t think they’ll be as good.

USN-BA-Nashville Christian-FRA-Goodpasture
Departing Seniors: Ryan Barrett, Drake Hughes, Mitchell Proffitt, and Nick Venable
USN were also a young team that performed above average this season, but, they, too, were hurt by offseason transfers, with their very good young players, Hoyt Sorensen and Aidan Ozgener, moving out-of-state. They’ll look to Barrett Teasdale to lead the offense next year, along with hoping that Ben Schwarz will come back. Like Pope, USN will still be quite young next year, but, they have some promising players like Jayden Charnparnichkarn, Brody Wales, and Joey Fried.
