Recapping last night’s games

The six Tier 1 teams who competed for the GNASH Cup have two records next to their score: their second half record, and their GNASH Cup record. As Montgomery Bell won the trophy last night, they will have a “W” next to their GNASH Cup record, signifying that they won it.

Tennessee Outlaws 5, (4-3-0), Brentwood 4 (3-3-1)
Jacob Schenk scored the game’s first goal just 49 seconds in, and nearly six minutes later, Owen Hervey put the Outlaws up 2-0, which was the score after the first period. Aidan Pustizzi got the Bruins on the board 57 seconds into the second, then scored again nearly two minutes later to tie the game. Nearly 90 seconds after that, Ty Essenmacher scored to give Brentwood a 3-2 lead. Almost eight minutes later, Hervey scored his second goal of the game, and it was 3-3 after two. Nearly two minutes into the third, Schenk scored his second goal of the game to give the Outlaws the lead back, then completed his hat trick by scoring the game-winner almost three minutes later. With just over five minutes left, Trey Wilkins got Brentwood within one goal, but the Outlaws held on from there to take a sensational win to close out the season, and claim the Hine Cup 3 seed, and give Centennial the 2. Now, they have to face a Station Camp team they’ve struggled with twice this season in the opening round of the Hine Cup, and Brentwood have to face a USN team that rudely welcomed them to Tier 2 life with a 5-1 whipping on November 15.

Next game for both teams
Brentwood: Henry Hine Cup first round game vs. USN-BA-Nashville Christian-FRA-Goodpasture - tomorrow @ 8:40 PM @ Centennial A
Tennessee Outlaws: Henry Hine Cup first round game vs. Station Camp-Liberty Creek - tomorrow @ 9:15 PM @ Antioch-North

USN-BA-Nashville Christian-FRA-Goodpasture 6 (4-3-0), Hendersonville-Beech-Gallatin 3 (2-4-1)
Vasili Santas scored the game’s first goal on a power play nearly two minutes in, with Ryan Barrett giving USN a 2-0 lead nearly three minutes later. 35 seconds after Barrett’s goal, Alex Williams got the Commandos on the board, then, Michael McEver put USN up 3-1 exactly two minutes later, and that was the score after the first period. Santas scored his second nearly five minutes into the second, and Nick Venable’s tally just over five minutes after that had USN up 5-1 after two periods. Just over three minutes into the third, Barrett Teasdale scored to extend the USN lead to 6-1. Harper Dienna got Hendersonville within 6-2 with just over two minutes to go, then Williams scored his second - and the game’s last - with 69 seconds left. USN got stronger as the second half went on, thanks to the likes of Santas being able to join the team following football season; don’t be surprised by a Rutherford-USN Hine Cup final. As for Hendersonville, a second half where they played nowhere near as well as they did in the first see them as the 7 seed. The good news is, they only lost 3-2 to their first round Hine Cup opponent two weeks ago, so, there’s a chance…

Next game for both teams
Hendersonville-Beech-Gallatin: Henry Hine Cup first round game vs. Centennial - tomorrow @ 8:30 PM @ Centennial B
USN-BA-Nashville Christian-FRA-Goodpasture: Henry Hine Cup first round game vs. Brentwood - tomorrow @ 8:40 PM @ Centennial A

Centennial 8 (5-2-0), Independence-Ravenwood 2 2 (0-7-0)
Blake Knecht scored the game’s first goal nearly three minutes into the first period. One second shy of exactly eight minutes later, Calvin Zacharias made it 2-0 Cougars, and nearly two minutes after that, Tate Butcher scored his first GNASH goal to have Centennial leading 3-0 after one. 39 seconds into the second, Landric Mayeski got the Eagles on the board, but any hopes of a comeback this time were snuffed out, as Centennial scored four goals in the second. Just over two minutes after Mayeski's goal, Rhett Gordon put Centennial up 4-1, with Eowyn Douglas scoring her first GNASH goal 24 second later to make it 5-1. Just past the halfway point of the second, the younger Butcher and Zacharias both scored their second goals of the game, and it was 7-1 after two. 56 seconds into the third, Brendan Mitchell scored the Cougars final goal, and two second shy of exactly eight minutes later, Mayeski scored his second to bring the game to its 8-2 final. Thanks to the Outlaws’ win over Brentwood, Centennial didn’t need to win this game - or even have it end in a tie - to secure the Hine Cup 2 seed. But they obviously did not want to have an interesting game against Indy to close out the regular season, so, they dominated. The best part about this was Kade Henderson played the entire game in goal, so, he got some redemption (it helped that his defense picked him up this time, too), and got his first and likely only GNASH win in what is very likely his last GNASH game before Centennial call upon David Busby for the Hine Cup. As for Indy, well, by this time next week, their season will likely be over.

Next game for both teams
Independence-Ravenwood 2: Henry Hine Cup first round game vs. Rutherford Rampage - tomorrow @ 7:10 PM @ Centennial A
Centennial: Henry Hine Cup first round game vs. Hendersonville-Beech-Gallatin - tomorrow @ 8:30 PM @ Centennial B

Montgomery Bell 2 (2-1-4, 8-1-5 W), Father Ryan 2 (3-3-1, 6-7-1)
The Big Red dominated the first period in shots, but Zach Fonnesbeck stood strong, and it was 0-0 after one. 54 seconds into the second, the Irish got on the board first, when Austin Hester led a 2-on-1 rush. He found Colin Sullivan hanging out at the right-hand side of the MBA net, and passed him the puck, which Sullivan slid into a surprisingly wide-open net to give Ryan a 1-0 lead. Just over three minutes later, Jack Halloran appeared to have made it 2-0 after scoring on a netmouth scramble, but the goal was waved off due to the net being dislodged, a decision that would ultimately decide who won the GNASH Cup between MBA and Franklin. With just over four minutes left in the second, and the Irish on a power play, Carter Middleton fell over at his own blue line, and who should come racing in to pick up the loose puck but Lee Guy; the MBA captain raced down the Irish slot all alone, and fired the puck between Fonnesbeck’s legs into the back of the net to tie the game. With just under 30 seconds left in the second, Parker Causey took an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, putting the Big Red on the power play. MBA needed just 10 seconds to convert it, as Michael Dattilo fired the puck into the back of the net from the top of the left circle, and, after giving up the first goal in the first minute, MBA had a 2-1 lead after two. With just over three minutes left in the game, Colton Edwards stole the puck from Brandon Fremgen and led a 2-on-1 rush with Sullivan into the MBA zone. The puck came to Sullivan, and he took a shot that managed to leak through Hunter Wieck, and go into the back of the Big Red net, to tie the game up at 2-2. From there, neither side scored again, but the result was good enough to get MBA the 21st point they needed to win the GNASH Cup.

To be completely honest, this was a rather underwhelming stretch run for the GNASH Cup. It’s one thing if both teams are winning games constantly, but Franklin’s fumble - which is pretty historic, by the way; in the era where the GNASH Cup has been awarded to the regular season champions, no one has botched it like that - kinda dulled the proceedings. MBA are the rightful winners, because they made sure to get positive results that helped them along. This is the first time in the era of awarding the GNASH Cup to the regular season champions that the team that won it had fewer wins than the team they beat (MBA had eight wins, the Admirals nine, but MBA’s five ties put them over).

Now comes the fun part: MBA and Franklin play each other tomorrow night to kick off the Predators Cup. Both of their regular season meetings ended in ties, but now, it’s the playoffs, and someone has to win. Oh, and look at who the Irish get first.

Next game for both teams
Montgomery Bell: Predators Cup first round game vs. Franklin - tomorrow @ 7:30 PM @ Antioch-North
Father Ryan: Predators Cup first round game vs. Pope Prep-MLK-GCA - next Monday @ 6:45 PM @ Bellevue-Crisp

Pope Prep-MLK-GCA 2 (4-3-0, 7-7-0), Mt. Juliet-Wilson Central-Green Hill 1 (2-4-1, 4-8-2)
Ryan Woods scored the game’s first goal almost five minutes into the first, and the Bears had a 1-0 lead after one. With just under four minutes left in the second, Clayton Roach scored to tie the game at 1-1, and that was the score after two period. Kade Ziemendorf then scored the game-winner with just over five minutes to go in the game. So, Pope and Mt. Juliet play each other on the first day of the regular season, and the last, and Pope win both meetings by the exact same score. A strong finish to the second half for the Knights secures them the Preds Cup 3 seed, while Mt. Juliet manage to finish both halves with the same record on their way to the 7 seed. They do have some hope, though; they beat their Preds Cup first round opponent the one time they met this season.
