Recapping last night’s games
Predators Cup first round game
Montgomery Bell 4, Franklin 2
With just over six minutes left in the first, Lee Guy scored the game’s first goal, when he hammered a Trace Graham centering pass into the bottom corner on the left-hand side of the Admirals net from right in front. Nearly four minutes later, Hudson Richards tied the game when he one-timed a centering pass into the back of the net from the left circle, but just over a minute later, the Big Red took the lead back when Michael Dattilo took a shot from the top of the slot that Franklin goalie Grayson Butters didn’t see until it was too late, and it went through his legs. MBA led 2-1 after one. Near the halfway point of the second, Ethan Moore scored a power play goal (with just two seconds left on said power play) when he took a shot from the right circle that appeared to deflect in off of a stick, to put MBA up 3-1. Just over three minutes later, MBA got another power play; Guy won the faceoff to the younger Butters’s left, took it to the slot, and fired it into the back of the net, converting the man advantage in just four seconds. The Big Red took the 4-1 lead into the third. Just 36 seconds into the third, Hank Hayes got Franklin back within two when he redirected an Owen McGroarty centering pass into the back of the MBA net from its right-hand side, but that would be the game’s last goal. So, after two regular season meetings ended in ties, someone finally won on the third try, and it was the Big Red, setting up a likely showdown with Summit next week. As for Franklin, a promising season continues to go haywire at the worst possible time. If they get Ravenwood on Monday, they’ll probably win, but waiting on the other side of that could be either Ensworth or Pope; in that case, they need to root for Father Ryan and Mt. Juliet to pull upsets on Monday, because then, it would be one of those two that the Admirals get in the Losers’ Quarterfinals.

Henry Hine Cup first round games
Rutherford Rampage 6, Independence-Ravenwood 2 1
Cooper Feasel opened the scoring just over two-and-a-half minutes into the first period, with Jackson McCoy tying the game up just 45 seconds later. The 1-1 score held up all the way until exactly one minute left in the second period, when Tucker Wilhelm scored what turned out to be the game-winning goal, and the Rampage led 2-1 after two. Early in the third, Rutherford ran off with the game, scoring four goals in three minutes and twelve seconds. Eddie Maze made it 3-1 just 72 seconds into the final regulation period, with Brennan Tellez making it 4-1 just 23 seconds later. 56 seconds after Tellez’s tally, Kelvin McClendon made it 5-1, with Maze scoring his second - and the game’s last - nearly two minutes later. Once again, Catcher Greyson plays brilliant in goal for Indy, but, as usual, he doesn’t have the team in front of him to help steal the game. Indy now have to turn around, and face a ticked off Brentwood on Monday, when their season will very, very likely come to an end, while Rutherford face USN, who might be the only team that can stop them from winning the Hine Cup.
Next game for both teams
Independence-Ravenwood 2: Next Monday vs. Brentwood - 5:30 PM @ Centennial B
Rutherford Rampage: Next Monday vs. USN-BA-Nashville Christian-FRA-Goodpasture - 7:40 PM @ Centennial A
Hendersonville-Beech-Gallatin 6, Centennial 3
Calvin Zacharias scored the game’s first goal with just under three minutes left in the first. Carter Morrison tied the game with 18 seconds left, and it was 1-1 after one. Morrison then gave the Commandos the lead nearly two minutes into the second, before Rhett Gordon tied the game up just over two minutes after that. 7:02 after Gordon’s goal, Aiden Gardner gave Centennial the lead back, and it was 3-2 Cougars after two. 35 seconds into the third, Merrick Mott made it 3-3, then scored what turned out to be the game-winning goal just over a minute later. Gideon Drobnick scored to make it 5-3 with just over five minutes left, then Mott completed his hat trick with an empty-netter with 83 seconds to go. A fantastic result for Hendersonville, playing much more like their first half selves. As for Centennial, they’ll be happy to see Station Camp, who they swept in the regular season, but awaiting them in the game - should they beat the Bison - after that will be either Rutherford or USN. This loss could end up costing them big time.

USN-BA-Nashville Christian-FRA-Goodpasture 3, Brentwood 0
As I’m writing this, none of the box scores have been posted to the GNASH website (thank you Mike Jones and Danny Corns for sending me the scoresheets to the Indy-RuCo and Hendersonville-Centennial games, respectively, so I can do most of my usual recaps), but Rich Melin tells me that Vasili Santas scored twice, with Ryan Barrett adding an empty-netter. Ben Schwarz comes up big in goal for USN again. Brentwood get shut out in the first Hine Cup game they’ve ever played in. Weird times.

Tennessee Outlaws 4, Station Camp-Liberty Creek 3
With just over eight minutes left in the first period, Dalton Alejandro opened the scoring with an unusual goal: from the left point of the Bison’s zone (yes, it is Bison’s, not Bisons’, as Station Camp are the Bison, not Bisons), he flipped through the air towards the right-hand side of the net. Bison goalie Carter Gilleece crouched down as the puck came his way, only for it to take a hop right when it got to him, and goal into the back of the net. 23 seconds later, Toby Mehaffey got Station Camp on the board, going on a breakaway, and sliding the puck into the back of the net on a backhand. Nearly seven minutes later, with 72 seconds left in the first, Logan Wood scored on the power play, taking a shot from the top of the left circle; Clive Keeler stood between him and the net, and deceptively let the puck go past him without touching it; it went in through Gilleece’s legs, and the Outlaws had a 2-1 lead after one. Just past the halfway point of the second, the Outlaws went up 3-1 when Hayden Hall banked the puck off of the bleachers side glass to Owen Hervey at center; Hervey took the puck right to the Bison net, and shot it in past the blocker of Gilleece. Nearly four minutes later, the Bison got within a goal when Sam Wiseman fired the puck into the back of the net from the top of the right circle, then 15 seconds later, Joey Siciliano tied it up, when he took the puck down the benches side of the ice, cut right to the front of the net, and fired it in past Justin Iannuccilli, making the score 3-3 after two. It looked like the game was about to go to overtime, when Jacob Schenk scored the winning goal with 25 seconds left in regulation; from the right point, he took a shot that went straight into the roof of the net. A great result for the Outlaws, who now face a Hendersonville team who will give them a game, but for poor Station Camp, this may be the end, because now, they have to face a Centennial team that swept them in the regular season.

351 days ago, in an epic Predators Cup Final, Zach Egli scored the overtime winner to give Ravenwood a second straight Preds Cup title, and a record seventh overall. How times have changed. Graduation ravaged the Raptors; nine players walked across the stage, including both of their goaltenders, and three of their Top 6 scorers. In the first half of the regular season, Ravenwood tried. They beat Brentwood, Pope, and Mt. Juliet. But there were issues. They got clobbered by Father Ryan, Franklin, Rutherford, and MBA. It was clear the depth wasn’t there. And behind the scenes, there was tension. After the loss to Ensworth on November 15, the coaching staff that oversaw the two Preds Cup triumphs, including head coach Mike Driscoll and Patrick Higgins, were fired, replaced by James Gately and ex-Centennial Cougar star Dakota Davis. I was told that the parents were unhappy about Driscoll giving the top players on the team more playing time than the younger players, wanting him to spend more time on their development. Basically, the parents figured that this would be a year where the quest for trophies would come up short. Gately has adhered to their wishes, giving much more playing time to the younger players. In his six games in charge, the Raptors have taken some whippings. They did win one game, their second-to-last game of the regular season against Mt. Juliet, but even there, they had to come from behind. The fact that leading scorer Liam Powell was the only Raptor to reach double-digits in points says a lot. Meanwhile, Summit are a team on the up-and-up. They are full of well-developed players and have much depth in their lineup: Zach Ellis, James Gilmartin, Cam White, Hunter Haley, Aiden Garner, Aiden Meyer. Seth Wagner’s goaltending improved over the course of the season.
Yeah, Summit are winning this game.
