Recapping last night’s game

Ravenwood 6, Summit-Page 4
Wow. Where to start with this one? Colin Gower started in goal for Ravenwood, as normal starter Brady Miller is awaiting clearance after suffering a concussion. Daniel Lawrence scored the game’s first goal nearly two minutes in, a shot from the left edge of the Ravenwood slot that ended up in the top corner on the left-hand side of the net. It felt like the rout was on, but the more the period went on, the more Summit struggled to get a second goal. Just past the halfway point of the period, Jack Ready tied the game, firing the puck into the back of the net from the left circle. Nearly two minutes later, Ravenwood took the lead when Oliver Lutz had a missed shot come off the glass directly to him at the left-hand side of the Summit net, and he banged it in. Nearly 90 seconds after that, Ravenwood won a faceoff in the Summit zone, and an Owen Appel shot from the right point was tipped in from in front by Ready. At this point, Summit starting goalie Seth Wagner was pulled in favor of Brady Tessier, having allowed three goals on just five shots. Ravenwood would take the 3-1 lead into the second period. 25 seconds into the second, Aiden Garner fired the puck into the back of the net from the right circle (from my vantage point, it looked like it may have glanced off of Gower on the way by). The Spartans then won the subsequent faceoff, where Brayden Owen passed the puck ahead to Aiden Meyer, who carried it right in front of the Ravenwood net, and backhanded it in, tying the game just 14 seconds after Garner’s goal. Again, the feeling was that Summit would take over the game, but it didn’t happen. Five-and-a-half minutes after Gilmartin’s goal, Ravenwood retook the lead when the puck came right to Jake Farrell after being poked off of Zeke Landkammer’s stick; Farrell fired it into the top corner on the left-hand side of the Summit net from the left point. 53 seconds later, James Gilmartin scored, shooting the puck into the left-hand side of the net past Gower, whose view was blocked. It was 4-4 after two. In the third, Garner had the puck come his way at the left-hand side of the Ravenwood net; instead of redirecting it into the net, he pushed it straight back in the opposite direction, where it hit Gower’s left leg pad. Near the halfway point of the third, Keaton Moffitt scored what turned out to be the game-winning goal on a power play, as he buried a saved Farrell shot when Tessier sprawled out to cover the puck up, leaving the net wide open. Ravenwood held on from there, with Moffitt scoring an empty-netter as time ran out. An incredible result for Ravenwood, which ensures them that they’ll be playing on February 21, whether or not they beat Montgomery Bell next week. Credit has to go to Gower, who made 35 saves on 39 shots, as well as the Ravenwood defense, who clogged up passing lanes, and made the Spartans take a lot of shots from the outside.

As for Summit…woof. What a time to have a game like that. After the two-goal spree in the first minute of the second to tie the game at 3-3, it felt like they were going to take over, but it never happened. They made many mistakes, rushing passes, not connecting on centering passes at the front of the net, not forcing their way inside. Now, in the wildest twist in a crazy season, either SUMMIT OR FRANKLIN will be the first team exiting the Predators Cup on Monday. Summit, the team that came up from Tier 2, and vaulted to the top of Tier 1; Franklin, who lost the GNASH Cup by a point, and who looked untouchable at one point this season. Come the end of Monday night, one of them is going to suffer a hard landing.
