Previewing tonight’s games
The games that MTSN will broadcast are in BOLD.
Franklin vs. Page-Summit (both 6-2-1) - 4:45 PM @ Centennial A
I’d like to be covering this game, because I haven’t covered a lot of Franklin games this season, but on the other hand, I’ve already covered a lot of Page games, and I’ll probably be seeing more of them as the season begins writing its final paragraphs, so, I need to back off of the Spartriots for a bit. Both teams are on winning streaks, a four-gamer for the Admirals, and Page have won their last five. After facing all of the supplemental teams in their last three games, Franklin begin a tough stretch to close the season: In four of their last five games following this one, they face (in order) Ensworth, Ravenwood, Indy, and Station Camp, the lone “easy” game being against JPII. Meanwhile, Page still have to play MBA and Father Ryan, but their closing stretch is still a bit softer, with the other three games against Mt. Juliet, the Kings, and the Outlaws. Both of these teams’ GNASH Cup hopes got a reprieve last week with Ravenwood’s loss to Indy, and now, they need to take advantage of it. I’d say that this is more of a must-win for Franklin since their final third is a bit tougher, and, like Ravenwood, the Admirals’ offense can be slow to get going. That can’t be the case against this Page team. Still, Franklin beat Page in the Preds Cup back in February, and nothing has really changed skill-wise for both squads. But, on this night, I’m leaning towards the co-op team.
Game prediction: Page
Clarksville Kings (3-6-0) vs. Montgomery Bell (5-2-2) - 6:30 PM @ Centennial A
I think we all know how this game is going to go. What really stinks for the Kings is the fact that they still have to play Nolensville, Ensworth, Hendersonville, and Page, with their one winnable game in their last five being against Brentwood. This was originally scheduled to be the Big Red’s Senior Night game, but that ceremony will now take place before their regular season finale against Indy on January 26.
Game prediction: MBA
Station Camp-Liberty Creek-Nashville (8-1-0) vs. Ensworth-Lipscomb-CPA (4-3-1) - 6:30 PM @ Bellevue-Crisp
I thought that the Bison were about to go through a period of pain after their loss to Mt. Juliet last week, but nope, they popped right back up and beat Father Ryan in a goalie battle, so, I guess they just tried to take a night off against the Bears (or, thought they’d win one easy) last week, and it cost them. Winning tonight would be big, because their next two games are against Brentwood and JPII, giving them a chance to pick up four more valuable points before a three-game closing run against (in order) MBA, Ravenwood, and Franklin that could make-or-break what could be a GNASH Cup-winning regular season campaign. They have to face an Ensworth team trying to climb back up the standings into the Top 8. The Ice Tigers won both of their games against Brentwood and the Rampage last week - as expected - by a combined score of 10-0 (six goals against the Bruins, the other four against RuCo), and are on a three-game unbeaten streak, which started with the tie-that-should’ve-been-a-win against Hendersonville. This is a big game for Ensworth. Both offenses are similar, with good top lines, although the Bison’s Top 4 scorers are all in double-digits. Where the advantage to me lies is goaltending, and it leans towards Station Camp. Carter Gilleece has a perfect record (Britton Watson was in goal against MJ), while Reuben Allen has had a mixed bag, with three wins (the other being picked up by Mattie Cox), but he’s also been in the net for their three losses, all of which have been to teams in the Top 8, plus the tie with Hendersonville, also in the Top 8. That’s why I’m picking the Bison here.
Game prediction: Station Camp
Nolensville (4-3-2) vs. Brentwood-BA-USN (0-8-1) - 7:40 PM @ Centennial B
If the Knights weren’t sitting on the Predators Cup bubble, I could see them putting Isaac Wenck in the crease tonight. But every point from here on out is precious, and they’ll probably have Bingston Soundara in goal tonight. That won’t make the Bruins happy, as another chance at getting their first win of the season likely drops to zero. A Soundara-Andrew Sallee goaltending matchup would be fun if this Nolensville team were facing last season’s Brentwood team with the Schultz/Cesarone/C. Fielder top line, but, it’s probably going to be another game where Sallee saves a bunch but a couple get past him, while his team can hardly get past the red line.
Game prediction: Nolensville
Rutherford Rampage (1-8-1) vs. Father Ryan (6-4-0) - 8:15 PM @ Centennial A
Ryan’s loss to Station Camp last Wednesday ended their GNASH Cup hopes; there’s no way that a team with four losses will win that trophy. They now need to focus on picking up points where they can to get into the Predators Cup. On Friday, they whipped Clarksville 8-0 to pick up two more. Two of their last five games are against Page and Hendersonville, but the other three are winnable, against Mt. Juliet, the Outlaws, and this one against the Rampage tonight. This is the Irish’s last game until January 5, and two more points in the bank would be big, and like I said, would probably be enough to get them into the Predators Cup. I can’t see them not winning this game.
Game prediction: Father Ryan
Hendersonville-Beech-Lawson (5-3-1) vs. Independence-Centennial (3-4-2) - 8:15 PM @ Bellevue-Crisp
Indy snapped a five-game winless streak last Monday with a big win over Ravenwood that leaves them only two points off of 8th place Nolensville. It is imperative that they grab the momentum from that win, because three of their last five games are against Ensworth, Franklin, and MBA. However, some fights broke out at the final buzzer, and there have been some suspensions. Owen Brought and Cash Branyan will miss tonight’s game due to getting a major and a game for fighting (Branyan’s suspension is odd, because he still isn’t listed in the penalty summary on the GameSheet for the game). Wilson Heep is suspended for tonight because he left the bench to join an altercation. And head coach Mark Layne is also suspended because Indy got exactly 12 penalties. This is also an important game for Hendersonville, because they still have to play MBA, Nolensville, and Father Ryan. The offensive advantage goes to Hendersonville, who are deeper than the Eagles; they also have the better defense. But Indy have the better goaltending, and David Busby will be looking to help Indy pick up another two massive points; they’ll need another terrific performance from him to start making the bottom half of the Top 8 nervous.
