Previewing tonight’s games

The games that MTSN will broadcast are in BOLD.

Predators Cup Winners’ Bracket Semifinals
#4 Summit-Page vs. #1 Ensworth-Nolensville-Lipscomb - 6:15 PM @ Centennial A
How they got here:
-Summit: Defeated JPII-MLK 6-2 last Monday in the first round
-Ensworth: Defeated Tennessee Outlaws 6-3 last Monday in the first round
Regular season meeting: Ensworth won 2-0 on December 9

Both teams scored six times in their tournament openers last week, but now, it’s time for them to have their rematch after their incredible showdown two months ago, where the Ice Tigers won despite being outshot 35-10, thanks to Bingston Soundara locking down the net. Now, Trex Hooper didn’t play that night, so, Ensworth might’ve scored more goals, but he will definitely be in the lineup tonight (provided he didn’t get hurt over the weekend in travel). It won’t be enough for Summit to use their speed, like they did in the first meeting; they have to score. Soundara is not invincible. He gave up three goals to the Outlaws last week, which is as many as he gave up in the entire regular season. Heck, he gave up eight goals in back-to-back nights across both games of the Preds Cup Final last March. But the Spartans have to score on him, and they have to do it early and often for it to make a difference. I’m not so sure if they can.

Pick: Ensworth

Consequences of this game’s result: Winner will play the MBA/Ravenwood winner in the Winners’ Bracket Final on February 19, while the loser will play Franklin on Wednesday in a Losers’ Bracket Quarterfinal

#3 Montgomery Bell vs. #2 Ravenwood - 8 PM @ Centennial A
How they got here:
-Montgomery Bell: Defeated Franklin 5-1 last Monday in the first round
-Ravenwood: Defeated Hendersonville-Beech-Lawson 6-0 last Wednesday in the first round
Regular season meeting: Ravenwood won 3-1 on October 28

In their October meeting, Ravenwood weren’t totally dominant over the first two periods, but they did enough. The Big Red were the better team in the third, but could only get one goal back, and Keaton Moffitt’s empty netter with 26 seconds left put it away. The Big Red can win this game, but they’ll need to play the whole 42 minutes like they did that third period back in October. If they don’t, it will be a repeat.

Pick: Ravenwood

Consequences of this game’s result: Winner will play the Summit/Ensworth winner in the Winners’ Bracket Final on February 19, while the loser will play Tennessee Outlaws on Wednesday in a Losers’ Bracket Quarterfinal

Henry Hine Cup Winners’ Bracket Semifinals
#4 Centennial-FRA vs. #1 Station Camp-Liberty Creek - 8:30 PM @ Bellevue-Crisp
How they got here:
-Centennial: Defeated Brentwood 6-4 last Wednesday in the first round
-Station Camp: Defeated Montgomery County Rangers 8-1 last Monday in the first round
Regular season meeting: Centennial won 3-0 on September 18

The September meeting between these two was Centennial’s second game of the season, and Station Camp’s first. It was also Drew Stratton’s first start of the season. The Cougars were coming off of a 6-0 loss to Ensworth two nights before. The shots were close: 21-17 in favor of Centennial. But the Cougars never built off the win, their five wins spread out over the season, while Station Camp went on a five-game winning streak right at the end of the regular season, having improved greatly. Unfortunately, Miller Campbell, who almost certainly would’ve been the Bison’s starter in goal, has been out since mid-January with an ACL tear in his right leg. Carter Gilleece will likely be the starter for Station Camp tonight. He’ll need to be as perfect as Stratton will be. Luckily for him, the Bison offense has gotten more in tune since that September game, and will probably cash in on their chances this time.

Pick: Station Camp

Consequences of this game’s result: Winner will play the Father Ryan/Rampage winner in the Winners’ Bracket Final on February 20, while the loser will play the Mt. Juliet/Indy winner on February 19 in a Losers’ Bracket Quarterfinal

Henry Hine Cup Losers’ Bracket first round
#8 Montgomery County Rangers vs. #5 Brentwood - 7:40 PM @ Centennial B
How they got here:
-Rangers: Lost 8-1 to Station Camp-Liberty Creek last Monday in the first round
-Brentwood: Lost 6-4 to Centennial-FRA last Wednesday in the first round
Regular season meeting: Brentwood won 5-2 on September 16

These two teams met WAY back on the opening night of the regular season on September 16, and now, one will end their entire 2024-25 season by losing to the other. The Rangers have shown no signs of improvement as the season has gone on (again, surprising for a team with quite a few experienced GNASH players, plus a couple of pretty decent newcomers in Connor Bailey and PJ Burns), while Brentwood, despite having their worst season since God knows how long, have at least snatched a win here-and-there (heck, they beat Summit). I don’t see anything different for tonight. Speaking of PJ Burns, he is back in the lineup tonight after being suspended last Monday for getting a 2-and-10 for charging against Mt. Juliet on January 29.

Pick: Brentwood

Consequences of this game’s result: Winner will play the Father Ryan/Rampage loser on February 19 in a Losers’ Bracket Quarterfinal, while the loser is eliminated

#7 Mt. Juliet-Wilson Central-Green Hill vs. #6 Independence-BA-USN-Nashville Christian - 8:45 PM @ Antioch-North
How they got here:
-Mt. Juliet: Lost 10-2 to Rutherford Rampage last Monday in the first round
-Indy: Lost 5-2 to Father Ryan last Wednesday in the first round
Regular season meeting: 3-3 tie on October 14

So, looking back at the box score for that October 14 game, the Eagles only had 12 skaters, the most notable absence being Barrett Teasdale, who was serving his seven-game suspension that has been mention a lot in this newsletter. They should have their full lineup tonight, and I don’t see how the Bears can cope with that. Maybe they’ll prove me wrong (wouldn’t be the first time). Jacob Turner is back in the lineup for Mt. Juliet tonight after being suspended last Monday for being the third man in on an altercation stemming from the PJ Burns charging incident in the Rangers game on January 29.

Pick: Indy

Consequences of this game’s result: Winner will play the Centennial/Station Camp loser on February 19 in a Losers’ Bracket Quarterfinal, while the loser is eliminated
