Last night’s broadcast

Recapping last night’s games

“Requiem for the Eliminated” returns for a third year as a postseason feature; it’s below the rest of this week’s schedule.

The game that was broadcast by MTSN
Predators Cup Losers’ Bracket first round
Hendersonville-Beech-Lawson 7, Ravenwood 4
The Raptors were on the back foot before the game even started, as leading scorer Keaton Moffitt was out due to an injury he suffered last week. Matthew Almeida scored the game’s first goal just 20 seconds in, when a no-look, backhanded centering pass from Merrick Mott hit a Ravenwood skate and came up the slot to him, and he roofed it from the high slot. 25 seconds later, Caden Sisco carried the puck out of his own zone, leading a 2-on-1, taking a shot from the right circle of the Ravenwood zone that went through the legs of Ravenwood goalie Colin Gower into the bottom corner on the right-hand side of the cage. Nearly 4:30 later, Almeida took a shot from the right point that Gower smacked straight down onto the ice with his blocker, and it bounced into the net behind him. At this point, he was replaced by Reese Mackenzie. Just shy of four minutes later, Sisco brought the puck down the Ravenwood slot, and took a shot that Mackenzie saved, only for the trailing Caleb Carlance to knock in the rebound. 2:05 later, with the Commandos on the power play, Mott fed the puck to Almeida in the slot, and he immediately handed it off to Sisco in the bottom of the left circle, and he buried it to make it 5-0 with well over two minutes left in the first. 16 seconds later, Canon Kiser brought the puck into the Hendersonville zone, and roofed it from the bottom of the right circle. 50 seconds later, Kiser passed the puck to the left point from the left-wing corner, where Robert Longard just managed to keep it onside atop the blue line, then took a shot that leaked through Hendersonville goalie Griffen Rumbaugh and in. The 5-2 score held up until exactly a minute into the third; a 4-on-4 expired, giving Hendersonville a brief power play, and just seconds into it, Landon Croft stole the puck from, I want to say Anthony Maltese, carried it to the front of the net, and roofed it. Nearly 7:30 later, Sisco completed his hat trick, when the puck came to him in the middle of the slot, and he shot it in through Mackenzie’s legs. Brady Friedman scored the game’s final goal, as well as the last goal of Ravenwood’s season and his GNASH career, when he took the puck to the front of the net, and backhanded it in past Rumbaugh with 34.9 seconds left.

This is the earliest-ever exit for the GNASH Cup regular season champions since the GNASH Cup became the regular season champions’ award in the 2010-11 season. Because this was the first elimination game of the entire postseason, the Raptors become the first team to bring their 2025-26 season to an end. Truly astonishing that the team that finished first in the regular season didn’t even win a game in the postseason. Credit to Hendersonville who tightly grabbed this game in the first and wouldn’t let go. They are dangerous when they make sure that things go their way.

Next game for Hendersonville: February 18 vs. the Nolensville/Page loser in a Losers’ Bracket Quarterfinal @ 7:10 PM @ Centennial A

The night’s other games
Predators Cup Losers’ Bracket first round
Montgomery Bell 4, Ensworth-Lipscomb-CPA 3 (OT)
Trace Graham scored twice for the Big Red, including the overtime game-winner, with their other goals coming from Ethan Moore and Matthew Moore, while Trex Hooper scored the final two goals of his GNASH career for the Ice Tigers, and their other goal came from Austin Reigle.

Next game for Montgomery Bell: February 18 vs. the Station Camp/Franklin loser in a Losers’ Bracket Quarterfinal @ 8:45 PM @ Centennial A

Henry Hine Cup first round
Independence-Centennial 9, Clarksville Kings 2
Aiden Gardner scored four goals for the Eagles, with their others coming from Oskar Dubon, Nick Claas, Caleb Mills, Tate Butcher, and Avery Aziminia, while Aidan Hasse scored both of the Kings’ goals. I mentioned in yesterday’s newsletter that the Kings played two games in Kentucky on Sunday, both against the varsity high school team of the Lexington Thoroughbreds. In the first game, the team breached the 12-penalty maximum, meaning that head coach Josh Tobin was suspended for the second game, which he served, and he was back behind the bench for last night’s game. PJ Burns, though, got a fighting major, and was called for four penalties in that first game, meaning he was suspended for the second game on Sunday and last night’s game, so, he should be back in the lineup tomorrow night.

Next game for both teams
Independence-Centennial: Next Tuesday vs. Tennessee Outlaws in a Winners’ Bracket Semifinal @ 8:30 PM @ Antioch-North
Clarksville Kings: Tomorrow vs. Brentwood-BA-USN in an elimination game @ 8:30 PM @ Centennial B

Tennessee Outlaws 5, Brentwood-BA-USN 3
Cam Miles and Mark White each scored twice for the Outlaws, with their other goal coming from Noah Kuehn, while Will Hubbard, Brody Bohman, and Dowden Fridrich scored for the Bruins.

Next game for both teams
Tennessee Outlaws: Next Tuesday vs. Independence-Centennial in a Winners’ Bracket Semifinal @ 8:30 PM @ Antioch-North
Brentwood-BA-USN: Tomorrow vs. Clarksville Kings in an elimination game @ 8:30 PM @ Centennial B

So, in a bizarro world-type situation, the Top 4 Hine Cup seeds all won their first round games, and remain in the Winners’ Bracket.

Previewing tonight’s game

Henry Hine Cup Losers’ Bracket first round
#8 Rutherford Rampage vs. #5 Mt. Juliet-Wilson Central-Lebanon - 8:30 PM @ Antioch-North
How they got here:
-Rampage: lost 4-1 to Father Ryan in the first round last Thursday
-Mt. Juliet: lost 6-5 to JPII in the first round last night
Regular season meeting: Mt. Juliet won 8-5 on January 5
If Callen Feasel can frustrate Mt. Juliet the way he did Father Ryan last week, maybe his teammates can convert enough of their chances to pull off an upset. They need to get their big scorers going, though. Jordan Antar and Cade Ellenburg got on the scoresheet for the Bears last night, and now the Rampage need contributions from Myles Thompson, Harold Segars IV, Cooper Feasel, and Graham Sourek. This is when you need your big guns, when the season is on the line. Brandon Schulenberg will be suspended for tonight’s game, as he received a game misconduct at the final buzzer against Father Ryan last Thursday; the specific rule he broke was 601(d7), which, in the USA Hockey 2025-2029 Rulebook, states, “Shoots or bats the puck outside of the playing area during a stoppage of play when done in protest of an official’s decision.”

Game prediction: Mt. Juliet

Consequences of this game’s result: The winner will play the Outlaws/Indy loser in a Losers’ Bracket Quarterfinal on February 18 @ 8:30 PM @ Centennial B, while the loser is eliminated

Requiem for the Eliminated

Ensworth-Lipscomb-CPA
Departing Seniors: Reuben Allen, Saxon Clements, Jax Dooner, Cam Fowler, Hudson Honeybone, Trex Hooper, and Clayton Roach
If Nolensville had stuck around, I have no doubt that a three-peat would’ve happened. But once the split happened, it was going to be tough to pull off; Nolensville took the top goalie, plus three prolific scorers and the other top defenseman with them. Adding CPA to the mix brought in two great players in Roach and Clements. Suddenly, Reuben Allen went from having almost no playing time to having all of it, appearing in every game this season except the season opener, when he was absent, and Mattie Cox had to sub in from the goalie pool because Ensworth played without a backup this season. Reuben got better as the season went on, but never quite reached the level of his predecessor. Now, as with all high school sports, after the pleasure, pain must come. That’s quite a bit of talent departing (Hooper and Dooner started out on this team as 8th graders). They are hanging on to some of it for one more season next year (Lucas Tarquine, Henry Oeser, and Logan Green, to name a few), and they have some young talent that looks promising (Talon Gill, Sully Henson, Austin Reigle). But they need goalies, plural. Another season of just one goalie can’t happen. Get two through tryouts, or if you can only get one, get another from the pool draft. I think they’ll probably drop because you can’t instantly replace all of that departing talent. It was nice having someone new at the top for these last couple of seasons, but this era is probably done, especially once next year’s senior class departs.

Ravenwood
Departing Seniors: Jake Farrell, Grady Fernan, Brady Friedman, Timo Holan, Anthony Maltese, and Lucas O’Leary
When I found out about Nolensville breaking up with Ensworth and Lipscomb to start a scholastic team, Ravenwood became my favorites to win it all. Even with the departure of Mason Reed, they were still loaded with scoring talent. That’s why I kept being baffled by the fact that the offense was so slow to get going in games this season; it cost them everything last night. Keaton Moffitt and Jake Farrell both broke the 30-point barrier, and Grady Fernan missed it by a point. Brady Friedman never transitioned to a goalscorer, remaining a playmaker. They bring back Moffitt (unless he leaves, which would severely hurt this team next season), Canon Kiser, Oliver Lutz, Cooper Friedman, Luke Pierce, Colin Gower, Reese Mackenzie, and Ian Murray as their senior class next season, and Lucas Voyles was the standout freshman, so, they have some promise, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they dropped off a bit next season because of the amount of talent that they’re losing. Aryan Patnaik will probably become a bigger part of the plans, too. I’m still sitting here at almost 2 AM in shock that this team’s season is over. And they were the first ones to be done. A massive chance slipped through their fingers. I keep wondering if their pipeline will dry up like Brentwood’s and Centennial’s did; the answer to that comes after next season.
