Previewing tonight’s games

All games will be played @ Centennial. The games that MTSN will broadcast are in BOLD.

Predators Cup Winners’ Bracket Semifinals - both games on Rink A
#8 Station Camp-Liberty Creek-Nashville Christian vs. #5 Franklin - 7:10 PM
How they got here:
-Station Camp: defeated Ravenwood 7-4 last Wednesday in the first round
-Franklin: defeated Hendersonville 5-4 on February 3 in the first round
Regular season meeting: Station Camp won 6-3 on February 2
When these two teams met nine days ago, their forms coming in could not have been any different: the Admirals had won seven of their last ten games, while the Bison, after a perfect 7-0-0 start, had lost six of their last seven, and were on a five-game losing streak. They had to beat Franklin to get the last Predators Cup spot, or else. However, they’d gotten a big boost when their #1 goalie, Miller Campbell, finally returned to the lineup after a year away because of an ACL tear; he started the Franklin game, and his teammates were clearly motivated by his return, playing aggressively to get the puck, rattling the Admirals, and posting a five-goal first period, more than good enough to get them over the line. Franklin had to turn around the very next night, and play Hendersonville in the Preds Cup opener. They went down 2-0 just over five minutes in, and it looked like they were about to be buried by goals again, until the Commandos took their foot off the gas, allowing Franklin to get back into the game and win it. The following night, the Bison took advantage of a Ravenwood team sitting back too much, and pulled off the big win over the Raptors. With the return of Campbell clearly boosting the offense, the Bison have become a team to watch in this tournament. Franklin will need to be vigilant to repeat making the same mistakes they did in that first period last time around, keeping an eye on the likes of Toby Mehaffy, Merritt Freeman, McClain Gregory, etc., at all times. They also got great contributions from the Mannion brothers, Ryan and Michael, in the Hendersonville game; they’ll need to keep that up. I think this game might be better than the last one, but it feels like that Station Camp are on a roll right now, and it’s hard to pick against them.

Game prediction: Station Camp

Consequences of this game’s result: The winner will play the Nolensville/Page winner in the Winners’ Bracket Final on February 23 @ 6:30 PM @ Centennial B, while the loser will play Montgomery Bell in a Losers’ Bracket Quarterfinal next Wednesday @ 8:45 PM @ Centennial A

#7 Nolensville vs. #3 Page-Summit - 8:45 PM
How they got here:
-Nolensville: defeated Montgomery Bell 2-1 last Wednesday in the first round
-Page: defeat Ensworth 3-1 last Wednesday in the first round
Regular season meeting: Page won 4-2 on December 1
Nolensville were Saved by the Bing™ with some help from The Kern™ against the Big Red last week, while the Spartriots were able to keep the Ice Tigers at bay in a defensive battle. When these two teams met back in December, Page’s speed was on full display against a Nolensville team whose inexperienced players made some mistakes that the Spartriots were able to take advantage of. That was by far the biggest win of the regular season for Page, and came at a point in their season when they were at full stride. They weren’t fully mistake-free though, as a couple of errors led to the Knights’ two goals. Page will need a repeat of that game tonight, and I’d say that they probably need to score some goals early to deflate any Nolensville hopes. For Nolensville, the gameplan is simple: Hope Bing continues to be Bing, and score on the chances that they create. I think Page have been really playing with some maturity these last couple of months, and it’s hard to pick against them right now.

Game prediction: Page

Consequences of this game’s result: The winner will play the Station Camp/Franklin winner in the Winners’ Bracket Final on February 23 @ 6:30 PM @ Centennial B, while the loser will play Hendersonville-Beech-Lawson in a Losers’ Bracket Quarterfinal next Wednesday @ 7:10 PM @ Centennial A

Henry Hine Cup Losers’ Bracket first round
#7 Clarksville Kings vs. #6 Brentwood-BA-USN - 8:30 PM on Rink B
How they got here:
-Kings: lost 9-2 to Independence on Monday in the first round
-Brentwood: lost 5-3 to the Outlaws on Monday in the first round
Regular season meeting: Brentwood won 3-1 on January 7
When these two teams met last month, Jackson Penfield got the start in the crease for Clarksville. I imagine Riley Barnes will be in the crease on this go-around. The Kings got utterly dominated by Indy on Monday, going down 6-0 just over four minutes into the second. Nothing really more to say about that one. Meanwhile, the Bruins weren’t totally dominated by the Outlaws, but they did find themselves down 5-1 just past the halfway point of the second before getting just a couple of goals back. The loss puts the Bruins on the back foot in terms of maybe sneaking in and stealing the trophy; now, they likely need both Father Ryan and Indy to be put into the Losers’ Bracket at some point during this tournament for their chances to go back up. It wouldn’t surprise me if Clarksville managed to win this game and stay alive, but I’m having a hard time seeing it happen. PJ Burns should be back in the lineup for the Kings tonight after serving his two-game suspension for a fighting major and being called for four penalties in the first of their two friendly games against the Lexington Thoroughbreds back on Sunday, which is good for him, because if the Kings lose, his GNASH career is over, and I know that any senior would rather be on the ice when their career ends than be in the stands.

Game prediction: Brentwood

Consequences of this game’s result: The winner will play the JPII/Father Ryan loser in a Losers’ Bracket Quarterfinal on February 23 @ 8:15 PM @ Bellevue-Crisp, while the loser is eliminated

Tomorrow’s game

MTSN is planning to broadcast tomorrow’s game.

Henry Hine Cup Winners’ Bracket Semifinal
#4 JPII-MLK-GCS vs. #1 Father Ryan - 8:45 PM @ Antioch-North

Requiem for the Eliminated

Rutherford Rampage
Departing Seniors: Lucas Bardo, Owen Dembouski, Cooper Feasel, Nick Hansen, Mason Matthews, and Alastair McCarrall
This team was absolutely affected by Eddie Maze and William Haynes deciding not to return for their senior seasons; new head coach J.R. Dunn could’ve used their offensive prowess this season, as I have no doubt that the Rampage would’ve won more than one game with them on the roster. The Rampage took a few beatings, but they were tough opposition against some of the Predators Cup-qualified teams like Station Camp and Hendersonville. With Maze and Haynes, they might have beaten them. Outside of the six seniors, this was a very young team. Graham Sourek was the standout freshman, while Harry Segars IV and Myles Thompson began putting themselves forward as future offensive leaders in their sophomore seasons. The fact that both of their goalies - Callen Feasel and Riley Brannom - are just sophomores themselves bodes well for the immediate future. My only concern was the fact that their roster was small, as during the Mike Jones years, he made sure to have an excess number of players to account for injuries and other reasons for absences. I hope J.R. Dunn can help those numbers rise again. It definitely speaks to the fact that we need a rink here in Rutherford County, although that would potentially break up the Rampage and create some more co-ops, which would be great.
