Recapping last night’s games

The games that were broadcast by MTSN
Predators Cup
Winners’ Bracket Final
Nolensville 2, Franklin 1
3:25 into the first period, Carson Ragancik took a shot from the Franklin blue line that goalie Teague Spencer stopped but couldn’t smother, allowing Spencer Kern, standing to his left, to jar it loose, and backhand it into the bottom corner on the right-hand side of the Admirals net, and it was 1-0 Knights after one. With just over two minutes left in the second, Henry Cravens took the puck from behind his own net into the right circle of the Franklin zone, and took a shot that appeared to deflect off of Spencer’s stick and in, and it was 2-0 Nolensville after two. With just under three minutes left in regulation, Ryan Mannion, standing next to his own bench, passed the puck ahead to Will McCormick, standing in the middle lane at the Knights blue line; McCormick dashed down the slot, got Knights goalie Bingston Soundara to dive out in an attempt to poke check the puck, and lifted it over him into the back of the net, but Franklin couldn’t find the tying goal from there. This will be Nolensville’s third straight appearance in the Preds Cup Final, but their first as a scholastic team.

Next game for both teams
Nolensville: Next Monday vs. the Franklin/MBA winner in the Predators Cup Final @ 8:15 PM @ Bellevue-Crisp
Franklin: Tomorrow vs. Montgomery Bell in the Losers’ Bracket Final @ 8:45 PM @ Centennial A

Losers’ Bracket Semifinal
Montgomery Bell 4, Page-Summit 1
MBA scored the first goal just 59 seconds into the game: a Page player (I’m not sure who, and can’t tell on the MBA video broadcast) pushed Trace Graham into goalie Justin Iannuccilli, knocking him out of position, and allowing James Lehrman to take a one-timer from the top of the right circle that hit the wide open net. Nearly 4:30 later, with the Spartriots on the power play, Hunter Haley took a shot from the high slot that leaked through Big Red goalie Tripp Bland into the back of the net, and it was 1-1 all the way through the end of the second period. 37 seconds into the third, MBA dumped the puck into the Page zone, and icing was waved off; Elijah Selby retrieved the puck, and, from behind his own net, passed it up the benches side boards, but it was intercepted by Graham, who fed it to Matthew Moore all alone in the slot, and he shot it into the back of the net to put MBA back in the lead for good. Just over 90 seconds later, with the Big Red on the power play, Graham barely kept the puck in the zone at the right point off of a faceoff, passing it across to Abe Lasher - back in the lineup after a one-game suspension - who moved down the left wing, and fired the puck into the back of the net from the top of the left circle. Lehrman added an empty-netter with eight seconds left for his second of the game.

Next game for Montgomery Bell: Tomorrow vs. Franklin in the Losers’ Bracket Final @ 8:45 PM @ Centennial A

The night’s other games
Henry Hine Cup
Winners’ Bracket Final
Independence-Centennial 3, Father Ryan 2
Nick Claas scored twice for the Eagles, with their other goal coming from Hank Walker, while Ridgeway Lambert and Hudson Laux scored for the Fighting Irish. This will be Indy’s first appearance in the Hine Cup Final since 2021, when they won it with Spring Hill, and Centennial’s first since 2023, when they won it as a scholastic team.

Next game for both teams
Independence-Centennial: Next Monday vs. Mt. Juliet-Wilson Central-Lebanon, JPII-MLK-GCS, or Father Ryan in the Henry Hine Cup Final @ 6 PM @ Bellevue-Crisp
Father Ryan: Thursday vs. the Mt. Juliet/JPII winner in the Losers’ Bracket Final @ 7:30 PM @ Antioch-North

Losers’ Bracket Quarterfinal
JPII-MLK-GCS 2, Brentwood-BA-USN 1
Carter Bahorik and David Bavas scored for the Knights, while Ben Marshall had the Bruins’ lone goal. Ethan Hickerson picks up his first GNASH win in goal for JPII (I told you he was due for one), as Collier Owen was put in the backup position, still dealing with his ankle injury. The win sets up the first rematch of this entire postseason, as JPII and Mt. Juliet played each other in the first round of the Hine Cup on February 9, with JPII winning 6-5.

Next game for JPII-MLK-GCS: Tomorrow vs. Mt. Juliet-Wilson Central-Lebanon in the Losers’ Bracket Semifinal @ 7:10 PM @ Centennial A

Requiem for the Eliminated

Brentwood-BA-USN
Departing Seniors: Will Hubbard, Harrison Maltz, Reid Michaelson, Reed O’Dell, Wilson Tucker, and Brody Wales
After how the Bruins strongly finished the regular season, I’m surprised that they went out so…unimpressive last night. I was thinking that this was going to be one of the worst GNASH teams ever at the beginning of the season, because they had a goalie and…almost nothing else. Business finally picked up in that last third of the regular season, and Sallee’s continued great play in goal was finally rewarded by his team winning games, including a win over Station Camp when they were still top of the league just before Christmas. Beckett Mickle emerged as the most promising freshman, but Charles Sloane (their leading point-getter in the regular season) and Jack Riley deserve some flowers, too. Next year’s senior class is a better group than this season’s: In addition to Sallee, there’s also Jonny Kelso, Brody Bohman, Joey Fried (joint-leading goal scorer in the regular season alongside Mickle), and Jayden Charnparnichkarn. Bryce Akright, Matthew Melamed, and Dowden Fridrich should be back, as well. Sallee’s dad, Andy, told me a few weeks ago that this team will make a run at the top next season. It would be one heck of a turnaround, but with the amount of teams from the top that might be falling due to the high number of big senior classes, it’s not out of the realm of possibility. Ethan Burau is a good head coach, but he’s never scaled heights that high before. We’ll see. Just get Andrew a backup so he doesn’t end up playing in every game again next season.

Departing Seniors: Madden Chandler, Jonah Ferguson, Reeve Gabele, Aiden Garner, Hunter Haley, Hudson Halters, Justin Iannuccilli, Aiden Meyer, Brayden Owen, Elijah Selby, and Brady Tessier
Look at that senior class. Easily the best in the league this season. They had a great season, but it could’ve been so much more. Turn either one of those three losses into a win, and Page would’ve won the GNASH Cup regular season championship, and probably would’ve gotten farther than Ravenwood. Now comes a massive rebuild, including having to find two new goalies. They’ll go from one of the oldest teams in the league to maybe the youngest, as, at the moment, they would only have two seniors next season in Ryan Ellis and Colin Breedlove. They would also only have four juniors, if their sophomores come back, and four sophomores, if their freshmen come back. If it’s true that this team’s pipeline is as full as I’m told, due to all the hockey players moving to College Grove from California, then maybe they won’t stay down too long, but I can’t imagine them bouncing back right away, as it’s too much to ask.

However, instead of scrolling down to “Become a member”, make your payment at the top of our Buymeacoffee page where it says, “Support Middle Tennessee Sports Network” (screenshot below). The cost is now $3.75 for a newsletter shoutout, and $7.50 for a Package of Perks.
