Last night’s broadcast

Recapping last night’s game

Predators Cup first round
Franklin 5, Hendersonville-Beech-Lawson 4
Just over three minutes into the first, Caleb Carlance opened the scoring by shooting the puck through the legs of Franklin goalie Grayson Butters from the slot. Nearly three minutes later, Matthew Almeida took the puck to the right-hand side of the Franklin net, and got it to trickle in through Butters’s legs. With just under four minutes left in the first, Michael Mannion found Alex Broy hanging out all alone at the front of the Hendersonville net, and fed him the puck, with Broy roofing it for his first goal of the entire season, regular and post, and it was 2-1 Commandos after one. Just 52 seconds into the second, David Unger took a shot from the Hendersonville right point that Commandos goalie Griffen Rumbaugh didn’t see until it was too late, and it flew over his left shoulder into the roof of the net. 2:01 later, with the Commandos on the power play, Almeida fed the puck to Merrick Mott as he was hanging out at the Admirals’ left-hand post, and he redirected it in to give the Commandos the lead back. Just 56 seconds later, Cole Wright found Ryan Mannion coming down the Commandos slot all alone, and fed him the puck, which Mannion took to the front of the net, and flipped over Rumbaugh’s left shoulder and in. Just over 4:30 later, Caden Sisco passed the puck to Landon Croft, who fired it into the back of the net from the right edge of the Franklin slot, and Hendersonville led 4-3 after two. Just past the halfway point of the third, with Franklin on a power play that was seconds away from expiring, Braden Coleman passed the puck across the ice from the left wing boards to Michael Mannion at the bottom of the right circle, and he one-timed it in to tie the game once more. Just over 3:30 after that, Ryan Mannion scored the game-winner, when Unger passed him the puck up the left wing, and the younger Mannion fired it into the back of the Hendersonville net to give Franklin their only lead of the whole game. A great rebound for Franklin, from playing their worst game of the season to one of if not their best in just over 24 hours. As for Hendersonville, a nine-game unbeaten run is history, and for the second straight year, a promising season is on the verge of ending, but this one is in danger of ending far earlier than it should.

Previewing tonight’s games

All games will be played @ Centennial. The games that MTSN will broadcast are in BOLD.

Predators Cup first round
#8 Station Camp-Liberty Creek-Nashville Christian vs. #1 Ravenwood - 7:10 PM on Rink A
Regular season records
-Station Camp: 9-6-0 (finished 8th, ahead of Father Ryan on head-to-head)
-Ravenwood: 11-3-1 (finished 1st, winning GNASH Cup as regular season champions)
Regular season meeting: Ravenwood won 5-1 on January 21
Exactly two weeks after the Raptors beat the Bison to win the GNASH Cup, they meet again with higher stakes. Station Camp finished off the regular season in incredible fashion on Monday night, browbeating Franklin (especially in the first period) to curtail what would’ve been the most heartbreaking collapse in league history. Their offense sprung back to life in a big way, catching out the Admirals in so many ways in that first 14 minutes. Miller Campbell made his return to GNASH in that first meeting with the Raptors two weeks ago, playing the final 10:38, making eight saves on nine shots, only giving up a goal because he lost sight of the puck, and Lucas Voyles noticed this, and was able to score an easy one. My concern with Ravenwood all season has been the fact that their offense typically doesn’t get going until the second period against the other top teams, and now that Camp have their #1 goalie back (I would assume he’s been granted a waiver for the postseason), an upset is absolutely not out of the question here. The other question is, who do Ravenwood put in net: Colin Gower or Reese Mackenzie? Gower was the one in the blue paint for the Raptors two weeks ago, making 27 saves on 28 shots; going with him would be the logical decision here. Since the GNASH Cup became the regular season champions’ prize in the 2010-11 season, the trophy winners have never lost their Preds Cup opener. Could tonight be the night? I’ll say no, but don’t be shocked if it happens; it’s bound to eventually.

Game prediction: Ravenwood

Consequences of this game’s result: Winner will play Franklin next Wednesday in a Winners’ Bracket Semifinal @ 7:10 PM @ Centennial A, while the loser will play Hendersonville Monday in an elimination game @ 7:40 PM @ Centennial A

#6 Ensworth-Lipscomb-CPA vs. #3 Page-Summit - 8:30 PM on Rink B
Regular season records
-Ensworth: 9-5-1 (finished 6th)
-Page: 10-3-2 (finished 3rd, below MBA and ahead of Hendersonville on goal difference)
Regular season meeting: Page won 5-1 on November 10
The November game between these two was the first game in which this very talented Page team put together a full 42 minutes; they were confident, smart, and dominant. Ensworth didn’t have a full roster that night, though; they were missing Jax Dooner, and Cam Fowler was still focusing on football. After that game, both teams racked up the wins: the Spartriots won five of their remaining seven games, and the Ice Tigers seven of their remaining ten. Both teams also scored 40+ goals in their remaining games, 45 for Page (with 19 of those coming in their last two games against Clarksville and the Outlaws), and 43 for Ensworth. I think this will be closer than the last game, but with the same outcome as the last one.

Game prediction: Page

Consequences of this game’s result: The winner will play the Nolensville/MBA winner next Wednesday in a Winners’ Bracket Semifinal @ 8:45 PM @ Centennial A, while the loser will play the Nolensville/MBA loser next Monday in an elimination game @ 8:15 @ Bellevue-Crisp

#7 Nolensville vs. #2 Montgomery Bell
Regular season records
-Nolensville: 8-4-3 (finished 7th)
-Montgomery Bell: 10-3-2 (finished 2nd, ahead of Page and Hendersonville on goal difference)
Regular season meeting: 3-3 tie on November 17
It’s amazing how one point can make a difference: If Nolensville had lost to Hendersonville last month, they would’ve ended up being the Hine Cup 1 seed, losing out on the most wins tiebreaker to Station Camp and Father Ryan. Nolensville aren’t the deepest team, but their Core Four of Charlie Bohnert, Spencer Kern, Jackson Malleus-Mayer, and Henry Cravens combined for 43 of their 61 regular season goals; Logan Campbell also contributed a nice chunk of goals, with seven. The Knights’ mostly young roster did see them struggle in some games, and Bingston Soundara showed he was human after all, being in the crease for three of their four losses. Meanwhile, MBA were once again a high-scoring machine, leading the league with 95 goals in the regular season. There is kind of a two-sides-to-every-story thing here, though; 70 of those goals were scored against the eight teams that will play in the Hine Cup, including the two they scored in their October 6 loss to Father Ryan. Against the seven teams that qualified for the Preds Cup, 13 of those 25 other goals were scored against Ensworth (seven) and Station Camp (six). Matthew Moore and Trace Graham led the Big Red in scoring, unsurprisingly, but what is surprising is the fact that most of their goals came against the Hine Cup-qualified teams, 11 for Moore, seven for Graham. 12 of third-leading scorer Duke D’Alba’s 15 goals came against Hine Cup-qualified teams, as well. I think this game will come down to goaltending, and while I think that Tripp Bland is really good, he’s not yet at the level of a Hunter Wieck.

Game prediction: Nolensville

Consequences of this game’s result: The winner will play the Ensworth/Page winner next Wednesday in a Winners’ Bracket Semifinal @ 8:45 PM @ Centennial A, while the loser will play the Ensworth/Page loser next Monday in an elimination game @ 8:15 @ Bellevue-Crisp
