Recapping last night’s games

Predators Cup first round
The games that were broadcast by MTSN
Station Camp-Liberty Creek-Nashville Christian 7, Ravenwood 4
What did I say? Yes, I picked Ravenwood, but I also said don’t be shocked if the Bison win this game, and they did. Grady Fernan opened the scoring just over four minutes in, when Cooper Friedman found him in the left circle, passed him the puck, and he fired it into the back of the net from the left dot. Nearly three minutes later, with the Bison on a 4-on-3 power play, McClain Gregory brought the puck into the Ravenwood zone, and fired it into the back of the net from the high slot. 1:50 later, Ravenwood regained the lead, when a tic-tac-toe back-and-forth between Jake Farrell and Keaton Moffitt saw Moffitt redirect the puck into the back of the net from the left-hand post of the Station Camp net. With 93 seconds left in the period, Anthony Maltese put the puck in the back of the net from in front, and for a moment, Ravenwood had a 3-1 lead, only for the goal to be waved off because the net was dislodged, and so, the Raptors carried a 2-1 lead into the second. Just 47 seconds into the second, Station Camp were again on the power play; Josh Peffer got off a centering pass to Toby Mehaffy in front, and he one-timed it home, allowing the Bison to convert the power play in just five seconds. Nearly six minutes later, Ravenwood were about to go on the power play, but it was canceled out when Moffitt found Oliver Lutz in front of the net, and passed him the puck from below the goal line, and Lutz knocked it in through the legs of Station Camp goalie Miller Campbell; this would be the last time Ravenwood would lead the game. 2:02 later, Ravenwood won a draw to the left of their goalie Reese Mackenzie, but Mehaffy immediately pickpocketed the puck possessor (I think it was Timo Holan), turned around, and fired the puck into the right-hand side of the net from the right faceoff dot. 64 seconds later, the Bison won a draw in their zone to Campbell’s right; Merritt Freeman sent the puck around the boards to the right wing side, where Maltese failed to hold it in at the right point; Tommy Siciliano grabbed the puck at center, carried it into the Ravenwood zone, and shot it into the back of the net from the left circle to give the Bison a lead that they would never relinquish, and it was 4-3 Station Camp after two. Just 62 seconds into the third, Maltese’s cross-ice pass attempt from his own left point went straight to Mehaffy standing in the middle lane behind the Ravenwood blue line, and he carried it down the slot and fired it over Mackenzie’s glove hand and in to complete his hat trick. Just over 90 seconds later, with the Raptors on their only power play of the game, Canon Kiser took a shot from the right circle that Campbell saved, but Farrell was standing at his left-hand post to knock in the rebound. Nearly two minutes after that, Gregory carried the puck into the Ravenwood zone, stopped on the left faceoff dot, then roofed it when Mackenzie dropped to her knees, and gave him the top shelf. At this point, Mackenzie was pulled in favor of Colin Gower, but it was too late, and Mehaffy scored an empty-netter from his own blue line with 1.1 seconds left to finish off a four-goal night.

Ravenwood become the first GNASH Cup winners to lose their Predators Cup opener since the GNASH Cup became the regular season champions’ prize in 2010-11. It’s the second time in the last three years that the 8 seed beat the 1 in the opening round of the Predators Cup; funny enough, that was Ravenwood doing it to what was then Summit-Page in 2024. Unlike Ravenwood, though, the Spartriots didn’t win the GNASH Cup in 2023-24 because the regular season format was different: Summit began the season in Tier II, and won midseason promotion to Tier I after finishing second in the seven-game first half of the regular season. Then the seven-game second half of the regular season was used to determine tournament seeds. The GNASH Cup was awarded to the team that had the best 14-game record among the six teams that played in Tier I for the entire regular season, which ended up being MBA. After losing to Ravenwood, Summit were immediately knocked out by Franklin, suffering the earliest-ever exit for a 1 seed in any GNASH tournament using the single-elimination/double-elimination bracket format. For the Raptors, though, suffering such a fate would be far bigger.

Now, one of the Top 4 seeds is guaranteed to be knocked out on Monday, with Ravenwood facing 4 seed Hendersonville. A promising season is going to come to an end for someone. This is how big this game is: I’m changing the broadcast schedule for Monday. I was initially planning to do the doubleheader from Bellevue, which featured the Hine Cup 3 vs. 6 game (Outlaws/Brentwood), and the other Preds Cup Losers’ Bracket first round game (Ensworth/MBA), but this may be the biggest Losers’ Bracket game in GNASH history, because the two teams that may well have been the tournament favorites are hanging by their fingers on the edge of a cliff, and one of them is going to fall off. I apologize to the Outlaws, who I haven’t covered since December, but especially to Brentwood; I’ve only done one Brentwood game all season, their 2-0 loss to Franklin on September 29, and they’ve earned another broadcast based on how well they played in their last five games of the regular season, but again, this is an elimination game the likes of which we’ve never seen.

Next game for both teams

Ravenwood: Monday vs. Hendersonville-Beech-Lawson in a Losers’ Bracket first round game @ 7:40 PM @ Centennial A

Nolensville 2, Montgomery Bell 1
With just under three minutes left in the first, Nolensville won a faceoff in their zone to the right of goaltender Bingston Soundara; the puck was passed to the right wing side, but Jackson Malleus-Mayer’s clearing attempt didn’t leave the zone, and Trace Graham grabbed it at the blue line, carried it down the slot, and backhanded it in past Soundara, who went down in the crease to try and stop him. Just over two minutes later, with Nolensville on the power play, Charlie Bohnert took a shot from the left point that MBA netminder Tripp Bland saved, only for the rebound to come to Spencer Kern at the bottom of the right circle, and he one-timed it in to tie the game. The 1-1 score held up all the way until just over four minutes left in regulation; the puck was cleared out of the MBA zone up the benches side of the ice, but right to Kern standing in the referee’s crease, and he carried it back into the Big Red zone, firing it into the roof of the net from the top of the right circle, and the Knights held on from there. Bingston Soundara was brilliant again, making 36 saves on 37 shots.

The night’s other game

Previewing tonight’s game

Henry Hine Cup first round
#8 Rutherford Rampage vs. #1 Father Ryan
Regular season records
-Rampage: 1-13-1 (finished 16th)
-Father Ryan: 9-6-0 (finished 9th, below Station Camp on head-to-head)
Regular season meeting: Father Ryan won 7-0 on December 8
If you had told me that Father Ryan would’ve ended up in the Hine Cup after a 4-1-0 start to the season, I would’ve laughed at you. I would’ve laughed even harder if you told me that they ended up in the Hine Cup with a record of 9-6-0, and lost out on the last Preds Cup berth on a head-to-head tiebreaker with Station Camp. It would’ve been unimaginable; after that five-game opening stretch, I was thinking that an image of Father Ryan holding the GNASH Cup at the end of the regular season wasn’t too crazy, but inconsistency set in for the ten remaining games, and here we are. Honestly, they’re probably in the right tournament, but I’m sure they’re thinking, “That could’ve been us!” after seeing the Station Camp/Ravenwood final from last night. Are they the favorites to repeat as Hine Cup winners? Yes, but I’m not ready to declare them total favorites yet, as they lost to Indy back in September, and Brentwood have my attention from their recent play. Meanwhile, the Rampage come into this game on an 11-game losing streak, and, it’s not being snapped tonight.

Game prediction: Father Ryan

Consequences of this game’s result: The winner will play the Mt. Juliet/JPII winner next Thursday in a Winners’ Bracket Semifinal @ 8:45 PM @ Antioch-North, while the loser will play the Mt. Juliet/JPII loser next Tuesday in an elimination game @ 8:30 PM @ Antioch-North
