Recapping last night’s games

The section “Requiem for the Eliminated” returns for this postseason. It is below the preview for tonight’s game.

The game that was broadcast by MTSN
Predators Cup Losers’ Bracket first round
Tennessee Outlaws 5, JPII-MLK 4
Clayton Roach scored the game’s first goal just shy of the halfway point of the first period, when he shot the puck into the top left-hand corner of the Outlaws’ net from the top of the left circle, and the Knights led 1-0 after one. Very nearly three minutes into the second, Cam Miles tied the game, when he one-timed the rebound of his own blocked shot into the back of the JPII net from the left faceoff dot. 88 seconds later, the Knights went back into the lead, when Roach took a shot that hit the post to Outlaws goalie Justin Iannuccilli’s right, landed in the left-hand side of the crease, and David Bavas knocked it in. Just over six minutes later, JPII extended the lead to 3-1 when Kade Ziemendorf backhanded the puck underneath a screened Iannuccilli into the back of the net from the left edge of the slot. 75 seconds after that, the Outlaws got back within one, when Elijah Freeman took a shot that went into the roof of the net from the left circle, and JPII led 3-2 after two. Just shy of three minutes into the third, Josh Kuehn tied the game, when Dalton Alejandro took a shot that was saved by Knights goalie Matthew Simmons, and Kuehn at first pushed the puck across the crease, only for a JPII defender (I didn’t see who it was) to crash the net, and have it go off of him and in. Nearly two minutes later, the Outlaws took their first lead of the game, when James Daniel scored on a wraparound attempt that went in off of Simmons’s right elbow. With just under five minutes to go, Kuehn blocked a shot from Roach, then carried the puck to the Knights net, and put it in the top right-hand corner. Just 15 seconds later, Joe Hiller scored the game’s final goal, when he raced to the right hand side of the net, and shot it in. The Outlaws held on from there, and Iannuccilli made one last point-blank glove save on Ziemendorf right at the buzzer. A terrific win for the Outlaws, one of their biggest ever, and they proved that they deserved their place in the Predators Cup. Iannuccilli was amazing in goal, making - by my estimate - more than 40 saves. As for JPII, this is one of the program’s worst defeats ever. They end the season on a three-game losing streak.

Next game for the Outlaws: Next Wednesday in a Predators Cup Losers’ Bracket Quarterfinal vs. the Montgomery Bell/Ravenwood loser @ 8:40 PM @ Centennial A

The night’s other games
Predators Cup first round
Ravenwood 6, Hendersonville-Beech-Lawson 0
Cooper Hill led the Raptors with a hat trick, with their other three goals coming from Mason Reed (he’s now on a three-game goal scoring streak after not scoring for the Raptors’ first 13 games of the regular season), Keaton Moffitt, and Liam Powell. The Commandos now have to turn right around, and try to save their season.

Next game for both teams
Ravenwood: Next Monday in a Predators Cup Winners’ Bracket Semifinal vs. Montgomery Bell @ 8 PM @ Centennial A
Hendersonville-Beech-Lawson: Tonight in an elimination game vs. Franklin @ 8:30 PM @ Antioch-North

Henry Hine Cup first round
Centennial-FRA 6, Brentwood 4
The Sallee vs. Stratton showdown turned into a goalfest. Nick Claas had a hat trick for the Cougars, while Brendan Mitchell scored twice, and Tate Butcher potted their other goal. The Bruins’ goals were scored by Callahan Fielder, Brody Bohman, Jack Schultz, and Wilson Tucker.

Next game for both teams
Centennial-FRA: Next Monday in a Henry Hine Cup Winners’ Bracket Semifinal vs. Station Camp-Liberty Creek @ 8:30 PM @ Bellevue-Crisp
Brentwood: Next Monday in an elimination game vs. Montgomery County Rangers @ 7:40 PM @ Centennial A

Father Ryan 5, Independence-BA-USN-Nashville Christian 2
Gage Hart and Colin Sullivan each scored twice for the Fighting Irish, with their other goal coming from Ridgeway Lambert. Barrett Teasdale scored both of the Eagles’ goals.

Next game for both teams
Father Ryan: Next Wednesday in a Henry Hine Cup Winners’ Bracket Semifinal vs. Rutherford Rampage @ 7:10 PM @ Centennial A

Previewing tonight’s game

Predators Cup Losers’ Bracket first round
#7 Hendersonville-Beech-Lawson vs. #6 Franklin
How they got here:
-Hendersonville: Lost 6-0 to Ravenwood in the first round last night
-Franklin: Lost 5-1 to Montgomery Bell in the first round on Monday
Regular season meeting: Franklin won 6-1 on September 23

So, Hendersonville’s failure to capture the 4 seed may well result in the end of their season tonight. It looks as if all the mojo they picked up at the midway point of the regular season is totally gone. It seems as if they and Franklin should have equal depth, but they don’t. Unfortunately for whoever wins this game, the Summit/Ensworth loser is next up.

Pick: Franklin

Consequences of this game’s result: The winner will play the Summit/Ensworth loser in a Predators Cup Losers’ Bracket Quarterfinal next Wednesday @ 8:30 PM @ Centennial B, while the loser is eliminated

Requiem for the Eliminated

JPII-MLK
Departing Seniors: Jacob Benoit, Coleman Glidewell, Nick Hollis, Nick Pellegrino, and Matthew Simmons
Benoit and Simmons are in italics because they were selected by JPII from the Outlaws in the Goalie Pool Draft prior to the start of the season
So, the gamble to put in the backup goalie instead of the #1 in an elimination game sees a 10-win JPII not only become the first team to be knocked out of the Predators Cup, but the first team in the entire league to wrap up the 2024-25 season. The Knights beat everybody but the Top 4 and Station Camp. If Anthony Pellegrino hadn’t left for Boston, they might’ve gone pretty far with him in net. They had the offense and the defense, they just needed that magic touch in goal. Jacob Benoit filled the shoes well, but he’s not Anthony Pellegrino. Pellegrino got no playing time for the Boston Hockey Academy this season, and has since returned to Nashville. He was at the game last night, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he came back for his senior season next year. As long as no one transfers out of state, the Knights are bringing back a lot of talent next season; Clayton Roach, Saxon Clements, Hugo Ford, Joe Hiller, Kade Ziemendorf, Ian Sullivan, and Reese Davidson should all be back next season to keep the Knights near the top. Bring Anthony Pellegrino back into the fold, and they just need to find another goalie. Let’s hope they get one that’s theirs that they can start grooming to replace Pellegrino when he graduates (if he comes back), and not having to keep borrowing from other teams.
