Senior Night ceremonies

Independence-Centennial and Ravenwood are having their Senior Night ceremonies tonight.

Scenarios for tonight

The following teams can clinch Predators Cup berths tonight:
-Franklin if they DEFEAT JPII-MLK-GCS
-Hendersonville-Beech-Lawson if they DEFEAT Rutherford Rampage
-Ensworth-Lipscomb-CPA AND Page-Summit if Ensworth DEFEAT OR TIE WITH Nolensville
-The WINNER of the Station Camp/MBA game if Ensworth DEFEAT OR TIE WITH Nolensville (if the Station Camp/MBA ENDS IN A TIE, Station Camp would clinch a Preds Cup berth, provided Ensworth still DEFEAT OR TIE WITH Nolensville)
-If Franklin and Hendersonville TIE their respective games, they would still clinch Preds Cup berths if Ensworth DEFEAT OR TIE WITH Nolensville; if Franklin and Hendersonville LOSE their respective games, they would ONLY clinch Preds Cup berths if Ensworth DEFEAT Nolensville

The following teams will be eliminated from contention for the GNASH Cup regular season championship if Ravenwood DEFEAT Brentwood-BA-USN:
-Father Ryan
-Franklin if they LOSE TO OR TIE WITH JPII-MLK-GCS
-Hendersonville-Beech-Lawson if they LOSE TO OR TIE WITH Rutherford Rampage
-Ensworth-Lipscomb-CPA if they LOSE TO OR TIE WITH Nolensville
-The Station Camp/MBA LOSER, but only MBA if this game ENDS IN A TIE

The following teams will be eliminated from contention for the GNASH Cup regular season championship if Ravenwood TIE WITH Brentwood-BA-USN:
-Franklin if they LOSE TO JPII-MLK-GCS
-Hendersonville-Beech-Lawson if they LOSE TO Rutherford Rampage-
-Ensworth-Lipscomb-CPA if they LOSE TO Nolensville
-Montgomery Bell if they LOSE TO Station Camp-Liberty Creek-Nashville Christian

The Rutherford Rampage will be the 8 seed for the Henry Hine Cup if:
-They LOSE TO Hendersonville-Beech-Lawson
-They TIE WITH Hendersonville, AND Brentwood DEFEAT OR TIE WITH Ravenwood
-Brentwood DEFEAT Ravenwood, REGARDLESS of their result against Hendersonville

Previewing tonight’s games

The games that MTSN will broadcast are in BOLD.

JPII-MLK-GCS (4-6-2) vs. Franklin (8-3-2) - 4:45 PM @ Centennial A
So, Ensworth’s win over Ravenwood on Friday gave JPII a Hine Cup spot (again, sorry for not spotting that while typing up scenarios for Friday’s newsletter on Thursday). Of the seven teams who have been confirmed for Hine Cup places so far, the Knights are the only team who can still get the 1 seed, as they can still reach 16 points, while current 9th place holders Nolensville have 15. They’re coming off of that surprising 11-3 clobbering they got from the Outlaws last week that I don’t think that anyone saw coming. Meanwhile, for the Admirals, the task is simple: Win and you’re in. I can’t picture them beating JPII the way that the Outlaws did, but I don’t think they’ll struggle to win. Wyatt Gerischer will be back in the lineup for Franklin tonight after serving his one-game suspension for a fighting major against Ravenwood last Monday, while Aidan Murphy is serving the second of his five-game suspension, and head coach Todd Grosse is serving the second of his four-game suspension for what went on against Ravenwood last week.

Game prediction: Franklin

Rutherford Rampage (1-11-1) vs. Hendersonville-Beech-Lawson (8-3-2) - 6:30 PM @ Centennial A
We all know the story of last year’s game between these two: Rutherford shockingly led for most of it, and Hendersonville had to score a late goal just to get a tie, and it ruined the Commandos’ season, costing them a Top 4 Preds Cup seed, as they ended up being the 7, got blown out by 2 seed Ravenwood in the first round, then got knocked out the very next night by Franklin. Both of these teams are very different this time: Hendersonville were good last season, but not strong; this season, they are strong, while the Rampage were okay, but losing the likes of Tucker Wilhelm and Kelvin McClendon to graduation, then Eddie Maze and William Haynes deciding not to return for their senior seasons, absolutely destroyed this team’s chances of a high finish. Things looked somewhat promising after their 11-6 win over Clarksville on October 22, because they were 1-2-1 (the tie being with JPII), but their season has crumbled ever since, as they’ve lost nine straight. If they snap it tonight, it’ll be one of the biggest shocks in GNASH history. They won’t snap the losing streak, though. Not against this Hendersonville team.

Game prediction: Hendersonville

Ensworth-Lipscomb-CPA (8-4-1) vs. Nolensville (6-4-3) - 6:30 PM @ Bellevue-Crisp
If the Ice Tigers had beaten Franklin before Christmas, they’d be leading the GNASH standings right now. That’s how astounding their late-season surge has been. They were ninth at the holiday break, now they’re two points out of first. They’ve really come together these last few weeks. Trex Hooper’s scoring has started to pick up, while Lucas Tarquine’s two goals against Ravenwood on Friday were his first two of the season. That’s a big surprise from someone who’s been a big contributor to their success the last two seasons. Clayton Roach has been scoring more. The big guns are starting to step up. But the biggest factor is Reuben Allen’s improvement in goal; he has shaken off the early season 7-3 loss to MBA, the 5-1 loss to Page on November 10, and the pre-Thanksgiving 6-6 tie with Hendersonville (where the Commandos came from 6-1 down), and really buckled down, putting up great performances against Station Camp and Ravenwood, the loss to Franklin notwithstanding. It helps that the guys in front of him are playing better, too. Meanwhile, Nolensville are 2-2-1 since the 3-3 tie with MBA on November 17, and Bingston Soundara has shown this season that he is indeed mortal (Brentwood great Daniel Falls showed this in his swansong campaign in 2015-16, so, Bing isn’t alone). The core four of Spencer Kern, Charlie Bohnert, Henry Cravens, and Jackson Malleus-Mayer have provided the scoring, and Logan Campbell has stepped up to help, but other than the occasional tally from Carson Ragancik, no one else is really stepping up for the Knights, and that’s shown this season, as they have struggled against the top teams. If they lose this game, they need to beat JPII in their regular season finale next week, and have either Station Camp, MBA, or Father Ryan lose their remaining games to surpass them, as all three teams own a tiebreaker over them (head-to-head for Camp and Ryan, goal difference for MBA since they tied). Unfortunately for the Knights, I think they’re going to have to beat JPII and pray for results to fall their way. Speaking of the Irish, Ryan fans and players need to root for Ensworth to win this game, because the Irish would then just need to tie Mt. Juliet on Wednesday to clinch a Predators Cup berth.

Game prediction: Ensworth

Ravenwood (9-3-1) vs. Brentwood-BA-USN (2-9-2) - 7:40 PM @ Centennial B
We used to circle this game on our calendars, because it was always the standout game of the season (most of the time, anyway). But the Bruins’ empire crumbled, and now, it’s just another game. Or it would be, if Brentwood weren’t on a two-game winning streak (three-game unbeaten streak), and the Raptors weren’t fresh off of being dominated by Ensworth on Friday to make the GNASH Cup race a lot more interesting. Brentwood beat Station Camp and Clarksville the way that they were going to beat teams this season: Andrew Sallee shuts down the net, and the Bruins cash in a couple of the few chances that they get. The Raptors have already lost a game like this this season, to the Outlaws just four weeks ago. If they lose this game, then the GNASH Cup race will turn upside down and inside out; it’s already the wackiest GNASH Cup race ever. Ravenwood losing would make it 1,000,000 times wackier. Not to mention the fact the Bruins would never let them forget it. I think Ravenwood will get back on track in this one though. Even with a win, they’d still have to beat Station Camp on January 21 to win the GNASH Cup. They can’t clinch it tonight in any way.

Game prediction: Ravenwood

Tennessee Outlaws vs. Independence-Centennial (both teams 4-7-2) - 8:15 PM @ Centennial A
So, this is a big showdown, because the winner of this game will get a leg up in the race for the Hine Cup 2 seed (they can’t get to the 1 because they’re both too far behind Nolensville with too few games to play). We all know that the goaltending matchup will most likely be Dawson Reynolds vs. David Busby, and that it will be a pretty good one, even though I think Reynolds is the better of the two. The offenses aren’t even, either, at least at the very top: Josh Kuehn has 32 points, just over more than double that of Indy’s leading scorer, Aiden Gardner (15), and Clive Keeler has two more points than Gardner (17). The Kuehn-Keeler combo has been lethal, while Indy really don’t have such a duo. Sure, they have Gardner, plus Hank Walker (who’s back in the lineup tonight after serving his two-game suspension), and Nick Claas, but they don’t have anything like Kuehn and Keeler. Keeping those two down will be a must, but Mark White will also need watching, both for his sneakiness and physical play. I’m liking the Outlaws in this one.

Game prediction: Outlaws

Station Camp-Liberty Creek-Nashville Christian (8-4-0) vs. Montgomery Bell (7-3-2) - Bellevue-Crisp
The one team who didn’t want to see the Hendersonville/Nolensville game end a tie on Friday was Station Camp. The point for the Knights meant that the Bison now need Ensworth’s help if they want to clinch a Preds Cup berth tonight, whether it’s beating or tying Nolensville, but then, the Bison need to either beat or tie MBA. If Nolensville had lost to Hendersonville on Friday, then an Ensworth win would’ve clinched a Preds Cup berth for Camp without them having to do anything against MBA. The Bison, of course, are on a three-game losing streak and have lost four out of their last five. They went from GNASH Cup contenders to worrying if they’re going to fall out of the Top 8 in the span of about four weeks. Tonight, they begin the most brutal gauntlet of a closing stretch of any of the Top 8 teams, having to face Ravenwood next week, then Franklin on the 26th, after taking on MBA tonight. The Bison have scored just five goals across these three games, one each against Brentwood and JPII; that doesn’t give me confidence about what they can do in these next three games, but stranger things have happened this season. MBA are coming off of a 3-2 win over Page last week in a game where they dominated the first, but nearly let it slip in the second before Trace Graham scored the winner. This is another game against a Top 8 team, and normally, I’d harp on the fact that Graham and Matthew Moore are doing nearly all the scoring in games against the Top 8, but considering how much Station Camp have fallen off in the last few weeks, I don’t know if it will be an issue tonight.
