Last night’s broadcast

Recapping last night’s games

The game that was broadcast by MTSN
JPII-MLK 5 (10-4-0), Hendersonville-Beech-Lawson 4 (9-4-1)
Nearly six minutes into the first period, Clayton Roach opened the scoring on the Knights’ first shot on goal of the game, when he took a wrister from the left edge of the slot that beat Commandos starting goalie Justin Smith blocker side. One second shy of exactly six minutes later, Roach scored again, this time on the power play, when he approached the left-hand side of the Hendersonville net, and shot the puck in from the right circle. So, JPII led 2-0 after one. Nearly two minutes into the second, Hendersonville got on the board while shorthanded, when Merrick Mott took advantage of a collision between Saxon Clements and Nick Pellegrino at the left wing boards of the Knights’ zone, carried the puck to the front of the net, and took a shot that appeared to deflect off of JPII goalie Jacob Benoit, and go into the roof of the net. Just 40 seconds later, JPII converted the ongoing power play, when Coleman Glidewell took a shot that dribbled through Smith, and ended up in the crease, allowing David Bavas to sweep it in; at this point, Smith was pulled in favor of Griffen Rumbaugh. Near the halfway point of the second (and game), JPII increased the lead to 4-1, when Joe Hiller took advantage of a Hendersonville turnover inside the zone, carried the puck to the front of the net, and backhanded it in (JPII had scored four goals on five shots at this point). Clements appeared to make it 5-1, but the goal was called back due to a dislodged net. With just 55.8 seconds left in the second, Glidewell took advantage of another Hendersonville turnover inside the zone, and like Hiller, took the puck to the front of the net, and slid it in, and the Knights carried a 5-1 lead into the third. Just over 5:30 into the third, Hendersonville got within three, when Gideon Drobnick sent a pass from the left circle to the left-hand post, where Caden Sisco was waiting to knock it in. Then, in the final minute, with the net empty, and his team on the power play, Carter Morrison scored from right in front to make it 5-3 with 38.1 seconds left. Then, with the net still empty, Landon Croft took a shot from the right circle that went off of Benoit and in just seven seconds later, and it was suddenly a one-goal game. JPII held on from there, and became the first team to take home the Rock Castle Cup (not Rock Island Cup, as I’d been calling it).

What a fun event this was. It’s nice to have new ideas in GNASH. Thanks to both teams for letting me be a part of history.

Next game for both teams
JPII-MLK: January 27 vs. Summit-Page @ 8 PM @ Centennial A (this will be their Senior Night Game)
Hendersonville-Beech-Lawson: January 27 vs. Rutherford Rampage @ 8:30 PM @ Bellevue-Crisp (this will be their Senior Night Game)

The night’s other games
Independence-BA-USN-Nashville Christian 9 (4-9-1), Montgomery County Rangers 1 (0-14-0)
Jayden Charnparnichkarn led the way in scoring for the Eagles with a hat trick; Landric Mayeski had two goals, and the Eagles’ other five goals came from Jackson McCoy, Josh Peffer (is that his first GNASH goal?), Vasili Santas, and Michael McEver. Brayden Kihara had the Rangers’ lone tally. The result of the game means that the Rangers will be the Hine Cup 8 seed, and Mt. Juliet-Wilson Central-Green Hill will be the 7.

Next game for both teams
Independence-BA-USN-Nashville Christian: January 27 vs. Ravenwood @ 7:40 PM @ Centennial B
Montgomery County Rangers: January 29 vs. Mt. Juliet-Wilson Central-Green Hill @ 8:30 PM @ Centennial B

Centennial-FRA 4 (5-9-0), Tennessee Outlaws 2 (6-7-2)
All six goals were scored by two different players: Nick Claas had all four of Centennial’s goals (SENIOR NIGHT HAT TRICK + 1!™ SENIOR NIGHT HAT TRICK + 1!™), while Logan Wood had both of the Outlaws’ goals. The result of the game means that Summit-Page clinch the seventh Predators Cup berth. What a nightmare finish for the Outlaws; they lose their last four games of the regular season from a favorable position. Now, their destiny is out of their hands; Station Camp can get the last Predators Cup berth with just a tie with Ravenwood on January 29. Meanwhile, the Outlaws need the Raptors to beat the Bison by at least four goals to get the last spot on goal differential. It’s going to be a dramatic finish. Centennial can still get the Hine Cup 2 seed, but beating Franklin will be a big task.

Next game for both teams
Centennial-FRA: January 27 vs. Franklin @ 4:30 PM (yes, that’s the posted time) @ Centennial A
Tennessee Outlaws: First round postseason game, tournament and opponent TBD, date and time TBA

Standings

Previewing tonight’s game

Franklin (9-4-0) vs. Summit-Page (7-3-1) - 8:30 PM @ Antioch-North
So, both teams now have a Predators Cup berth, meaning that now they can pursue a high seed. Both teams can still get the 2, but they would need to win out, and have everyone ahead of them sputter. This is the beginning of a busy two weeks for the Spartans, who will play ALL THREE of their remaining games at the end of the month. Franklin are coming off of a 4-0 loss to MBA on Monday, while Summit are hitting the ice for the first time since the 2-0 loss to Ensworth on December 9. This could be a really fun game.

Pick: Summit
