Senior Night ceremony

The Clarksville Kings are having their Senior Night ceremony tonight.

Scenarios for tonight

JPII-MLK-GCS AND Independence-Centennial will be eliminated from contention for the GNASH Cup regular season championship if JPII LOSE TO Station Camp-Liberty Creek-Nashville Christian; they would also be eliminated from contention if Ravenwood DEFEAT Franklin.

Independence-Centennial will be eliminated from contention for the GNASH Cup regular season championship if they LOSE TO Ensworth-Lipscomb-CPA, AND Ravenwood DEFEAT Franklin.

The Tennessee Outlaws will end up with a Henry Hine Cup spot if they LOSE TO Father Ryan, AND Ensworth-Lipscomb-CPA DEFEAT Independence-Centennial.

Previewing tonight’s games

The games that MTSN will broadcast are in BOLD.

Montgomery Bell (6-3-2) vs. Page-Summit (7-2-2) - 4:45 PM @ Centennial A
This is a big game for both teams’ GNASH Cup hopes, but it’s an even bigger one for the Big Red, because a loss would mean a fourth defeat this season, and would very likely push them down the conveyor belt towards the axe at a quicker clip. One big issue I’ve seen with the Big Red this season is the fact that a lot of their juniors haven’t been consistently contributing offensively in “big” games, especially ones they’ve lost. In MBA’s games against Father Ryan, Ravenwood, Franklin, Nolensville, and Hendersonville, only one junior has scored in four of those five games: Cortland Klett against Ryan, Ethan Moore against Ravenwood, Duke D’Alba against Franklin, and Abe Lasher against Nolensville. This is the group that will take up the offensive mantle for the Big Red next season after Matthew Moore and Trace Graham depart. Tonight, they have to face a Page team that’s on a seven-game unbeaten streak. One of these juniors (one that’s not D’Alba or Lasher, at least) is going to have to step up big. The Spartriots got a scare last time out when they squeaked out a win against Mt. Juliet, but they’ve been consistent after getting out of their early season funk otherwise. They can’t relax against this MBA team, even one that’s winless against teams in the Top 8 so far this season. They seem to have kept the angry message head coach Greg Sauers gave them in between the second and third periods of their come-from-behind win against Hendersonville in their minds. Just play good defense against Moore, Graham, and D’Alba when they’re on the ice, and cash in your opportunities, and this might go like the Nolensville game.

Station Camp-Liberty Creek-Nashville Christian (8-3-0) vs. JPII-MLK-GCS (3-5-2) - 6:30 PM @ Centennial A
December was a nightmare for the Bison: They came into the Month of Santa with a perfect 7-0-0 record, then lost three of their four games, including defeats to Mt. Juliet and Brentwood that probably shouldn’t have happened. If they had won that Brentwood game, then they would’ve been able to clinch a Preds Cup berth tonight against JPII. Alas, because of that defeat, they can’t clinch a Preds Cup berth tonight, and can’t until Friday at the earliest (because Nolensville aren’t playing tonight, and the Knights need to drop two more points before Preds Cup berths can start being clinched). So, this winnable game became a bit bigger than it should’ve, not least because after this game, Camp have a closing stretch against MBA, Ravenwood, and Franklin, in that order. That is the toughest closing stretch of anyone in the Top 8. A new year brings about a clean slate; they need to take advantage of it tonight. Meanwhile, the Knights will be the busiest team of anyone in January, because they still have a full third of the regular season to play (they still have to play Franklin, Nolensville, and Ensworth). They haven’t been terrible this season; in fact, they’re on a two-game winning streak coming into tonight. Their worst defeat was the 13-3 pelting they got from MBA last month, while their other four losses have ranged in margins of two to four goals. I’m sure at some point that Justin Clark will give Ethan Hickerson another go in goal before the regular season ends; could it be tonight? We’ll see.

Game prediction: Station Camp

Father Ryan (7-4-0) vs. Tennessee Outlaws (3-6-2) - 6:30 PM @ Bellevue-Crisp
The Irish had a longer break than anyone else, playing their last pre-Christmas game on December 8, so, they should be very well rested. They’ve outscored their opposition 15-0 in their last two games. Will their high-scoring touch continue tonight? With Dawson Reynolds (likely) in goal, probably not. The Outlaws backed up their shock win over Ravenwood with a come-from-behind tie with Brentwood, so, I’m not too big on their chances to pull off another upset. And who knows? They might give Thomas Redden another start in the crease. Even so, I’m thinking that this ends with a victorious Irish team.

Game prediction: Father Ryan

Hendersonville-Beech-Lawson (7-3-1) vs. Clarksville Kings (3-9-0) - 7 PM @ Ford-Clarksville
I think we all know how this one is going to go. The Kings are on a seven-game losing streak, and the chances of it ending tonight aren’t great. PJ Burns is suspended for this game because he got called for four penalties in the Kings’ loss to Ensworth back on December 18 in the last game played before the holiday break, which stinks for him, because he can’t play in the Senior Night game. He should still be able to take part in the pregame ceremony, though, since it doesn’t constitute playing. It’ll be a quick ceremony, because, aside from Burns, Chris Feckner is the Kings’ only other senior this season.

Game prediction: Hendersonville

Franklin (7-2-2) vs. Ravenwood (8-2-1) - 7:40 PM @ Centennial B
Both teams picked up big wins before the holidays: Franklin against Ensworth, and Ravenwood against Nolensville. Normally, I’d say that Franklin’s win was bigger because of the Ice Tigers’ resurgence, but, the Raptors’ win over the Knights snapped a two-game losing skid for them, and a loss could’ve been devastating with games against Ensworth and Station Camp still to come. There’s a very good chance that whoever wins this game could go on to win the GNASH Cup regular season championship; I think that this is more of a must-win for Franklin in that regard, because they have an “easier” closing stretch against Indy, JPII, and Station Camp, and a two-point pickup tonight would be a massive boost with those games around the corner. It’ll be very important for the Admirals to suppress the likes of Keaton Moffitt, Grady Fernan, and Jake Farrell. We know that they’ll be physical, but, of course, they’ll need to cash in on the chances they get, too. It would be great if Franklin won this game, and then, went on to win the GNASH Cup they missed out on two seasons ago, but it is so hard to bet against Ravenwood, even after a December where they lost two out of three, but like I said about Station Camp, this is a clean slate.

Game prediction: Ravenwood

Mt. Juliet-Wilson Central-Lebanon (3-9-0) vs. Rutherford Rampage (1-10-1) - 8:15 PM @ Centennial A
The one team that didn’t want to see Brentwood beat Station Camp (aside from Station Camp) was the Rampage. They’d been ahead of Brentwood in the standings since beating Clarksville in October, but have lost eight straight since then; however, the Bruins kept losing, too (their tie with Indy came before the Rampage’s win), until the tie with the Outlaws on December 15. But the Bruins’ win put them in 15th place in the standings, and moved RuCo to 16th. The two teams will meet on January 26, the currently-scheduled final night of the regular season. Between now and then, the Rampage have to face Hendersonville, while Brentwood have a perhaps now-winnable game against Clarksville, plus Ravenwood. Before that, they must face a Mt. Juliet team that’s won three of their last six, and in their other three games, they’ve lost two by one goal, and the other by two. Like I keep saying, the addition of Cade Ellenburg has helped boost their offense, and made them a better team. I don’t see how they don’t win this game tonight. Owen Dembouski is suspended for this game for getting into a fight with Harrington Walker in the 7-0 loss to Indy on December 15.

Game prediction: Mt. Juliet

Independence-Centennial (4-5-2) vs. Ensworth-Lipscomb-CPA (6-4-1) - 8:15 PM @ Bellevue-Crisp
As I’ve said, I think the Eagles need to run the table, or at least, win three of their last four, to get into the Predators Cup. They have quite the closing gauntlet, having to face Ensworth, Franklin, the Outlaws, and MBA. They’re going into this game at a big disadvantage, as Harrington Walker, who has emerged as their recent offensive leader, is suspended for this game and the Franklin game on Friday for the aforementioned scrap with Owen Dembouski in the Rampage game, but he also got called for four penalties in that game, so, that’s why he’s got a forced two-game hiatus. Even worse news for Indy is the fact that Trex Hooper is back in the lineup for the Ice Tigers after missing their games against Franklin and Clarksville with a broken foot. There’s even more good news for Ensworth: Logan Green’s kneeing major against Clarksville was reduced to a minor, meaning he can play tonight. However, Jax Dooner’s head contact major was upheld, and he’ll have to miss tonight’s game, as will assistant coach Patrick Murray, who was acting head coach against Clarksville, when Ensworth got called for exactly 12 penalties. Considering how much deeper the Ice Tigers are, I’m having a hard time seeing anything other than an Ensworth win.

Game prediction: Ensworth
