Predators Cup Final Game 2
Montgomery Bell 3, Nolensville 0
Henry Berk opened the scoring with just under five minutes left in the first, when he took a shot through traffic from the left point that appeared to deflect into the top corner of the left-hand side of the net off the stick handle of Knights goalie Bingston Soundara. The Big Red’s 1-0 lead held up all the way through the ice cut following the second period. Just 97 seconds into the third, Emmett Szakos gave the puck away to Cortland Klett at the Nolensville blue line; Klett took it down the slot to the Nolensville net, where Soundara went down to his stomach, allowing Klett to backhand it in. 5:03 later, the puck came to Andrew Frech in front, and he slipped it under Soundara’s left leg and in for the game’s final goal. The Big Red win their second Predators Cup, their first coming in 2021. They also become the first team in GNASH history to win any postseason tournament in the double-elimination format after being knocked into the Losers’ Bracket following the first round (by Nolensville, no less). Conner Mazzoni was named the Mitchell Mielnik MVP for his two goals in Monday’s game, becoming the first freshman to win the award (or either of the tournament final MVP awards). Congratulations to the Big Red; they really turned things on these last couple of weeks.

Requiem for the Runners-up
Nolensville
Departing Seniors: Charlie Bohnert, Henry Cravens, Spencer Kern, Jackson Malleus-Mayer, and Bingston Soundara
Like I said in yesterday’s newsletter, Nolensville’s youth outside of their core got exposed over these last couple of games. There’s only so much they could do. After a few years of joy, now comes the pain. Such is high school sports. Those other four are big losses, but Soundara is a diamond in the rough. It’s very rare for a goalie to be that good in GNASH. He is irreplaceable. But don’t forget that Isaac Wenck goes back to Station Camp, since he was a loaner, so, the Knights will be goalie shopping this summer. Since they have a rink just two miles north of campus, I wouldn’t be surprised if they’ve built enough of a pipeline to maybe rebuild faster than a team usually would. Here’s a wacky bit: If Caleb Carlance had scored on that late breakaway in the 4-4 tie with Hendersonville on January 9, the Commandos would’ve won that game, and that dropped point would’ve seen Nolensville be the Hine Cup 1 seed. They took that blessing and got all the way to the Preds Cup Final in their first season as a scholastic team.

Departing Seniors: Trace Graham, James Lehrman, Matthew Moore, and Ethan Sides
I’ll be honest, I didn’t see this happening when the tournament started last month. The fact that Graham and Moore were doing all the scoring against the top teams when this team was full of scorers concerned me. In that first round game against Nolensville (which happened a month ago yesterday, by the way), they were generating chances and shots, but legwork was still coming from those two. Graham had to rescue them against Ensworth, but it was against Station Camp that someone finally stepped up: Conner Mazzoni. His hat trick kept them in the fight, and the depth scoring began to show up after that. Lehrman had two against Page, Lawson Brown scored against Franklin, Abe Lasher, Duke D’Alba, they all contributed. And then last night, Henry Berk, Cortland Klett, and Andrew Frech. Moore and Graham did not score a single goal this entire week. The depth scoring blasted to the surface, and it won them the big prize. Lasher and D’Alba should be leading next year’s senior class, and Maazoni will probably be looked to as a leader, as well. I think the Big Red might be favorites to repeat next season. We’ll see. Great to see Graham and Moore end their careers on the highest of highs.
