Last night’s broadcast
Recapping last night’s game
Independence-Centennial 6 (2-1-0), Page-Summit 2 (1-1-1)
Cash Branyan - recently added to the Indy roster, and playing in GNASH for the first time since the 2022-23 season, when he played for what was then Pope Prep-CPA-GCA - opened the scoring just three seconds shy of halfway, when he carried the puck down the left wing of the Page zone, and cut to the front of the net, sliding it through the open five-hole of goalie Justin Iannuccilli (it was not, as the Gamesheet says, Avery Aziminia, as she wears #37 (Branyan wore #38), and her name is on the back of her sweater (Branyan’s sweater was blank)). 2:10 later, Spencer Pacholko made it 2-0, when he pounded in the rebound of a saved Aiden Gardner shot from right in front of the net, and that was the score after the first. Just over five minutes into the second, Caleb Mills made it 3-0, when he put the puck out in front from behind the net, and it went in off of someone from Page (I didn’t see who it went off of). Nearly five minutes later, Harrington Walker scored his first GNASH goal after a brilliant piece of defense: He followed Aiden Meyer to the right point of the Indy zone, where Meyer attempted to leave the puck for Aiden Garner; Walker stole the puck before Garner could react, carried it into the Page zone, and fired it into the back of the net from the left circle. Page got on the board 80 seconds later, when Madden Chandler stole an Oskar Dubon pass inside the Indy zone, and gave it to Hudson Halters, who fired it into the roof of the net from the high slot, and it was 4-1 Eagles after two. With just under six minutes left in the game, the Spartriots got within two goals, when they won a faceoff in the Indy zone; Meyer took a shot that was saved by David Busby, but the puck came over to the right-hand side of the net, where Tyler Bell was waiting to tuck in the rebound for his first GNASH goal. But that’s as close as Page would get: just over two minutes later, Aiden Gardner deflected a Branyan shot from the right point into the back of the net from in front, then added a shorthanded empty-netter with 73 seconds left to bring the game to its final score.
So, I was wrong about Indy’s depth. They actually have quite a bit, and adding Cash Branyan to the roster only adds to it. During his one previous season in 2022-23, he had nine goals and seven assists; he spent the last two seasons playing for the Colorado Thunderbirds’ 16U AAA team, and Okanagan Warriors Hockey Club’s U18 team in the Canada-based Junior Prospects Hockey League, respectively.
But the star of the night was David Busby in goal. He set the tone right away, when he made an incredible point-blank save on Madden Chandler ten seconds into the game. Page actually did a great job of keeping the puck away from Indy in the third period, and outshot the Eagles 28-13 over the last two periods, but it was too late; Busby had settled into a groove, and the Spartriots’ confidence was shot. It’s another frustrating loss for a very talented Page-Summit team.
Mark Layne has truly returned to GNASH (as a head coach). He took over the team early last month, and has them playing some pretty good hockey already. Could they beat Ravenwood or MBA playing like they did last night? Before last night, I would’ve said no. Now? Yes, they can. And they’ve got a few more games in front of them to improve even more before facing them: They don’t play Ravenwood until December 1, and they don’t play the Big Red until the currently-scheduled final night of the regular season on January 26.
Next game for both teams
Independence-Centennial: Monday vs. Brentwood-BA-USN @ 4:45 PM @ Centennial A
