Previewing tonight’s games

The game that MTSN is broadcasting is in BOLD.

Rutherford Rampage (1-3-0) vs. Mt. Juliet-Wilson Central-Green Hill (0-4-2) - 5:30 PM @ Centennial A
I’m not sure if Anthony Giampaolo’s match penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct from the Bears’ game against Indy last Monday was rescinded, or if he’s been suspended and it just hasn’t been put on the website, but either way, the Bears need him, because this is another one of those rare games they’ll have a decent chance of winning this season. Each team’s leading scorer has four points (Kyle Wolfe has one goal and three assists for the Rampage, while Shuayra Arora and Trenten Gorrell each have four points for MJ, with Arora’s coming from two goals and two assists, and Gorrell’s stats are the same as Wolfe’s), so, MJ might be in for another low-scoring affair that could end in a 3-3 tie (they’ve had two games end by that score this season). I think the Rampage will nick it in the end, though.

Pick: Rutherford

Montgomery Bell (2-0-1) vs. Station Camp-Liberty Creek (0-3-1) - 7:05 PM @ Centennial A
After Keaton Howard made 30 saves on 32 Ensworth shots last Wednesday, MBA should probably hope they don’t face him tonight. In the one game where they’ve been challenged (the 2-2 tie with Father Ryan), they struggled to get shots off. Now, Station Camp aren’t as good as the Irish, so, I expect MBA to get off more shots. However, outside of the 5-1 loss to Hendersonville last week, the Bison have been in every game they’ve played so far this season, and only losing 2-1 to Ensworth is pretty impressive. This feels like it could be a repeat of MBA’s win over Indy two weeks ago, where, despite winning 6-0, they only outshot the Eagles 26-22.

Pick: MBA

Summit-Page (3-1-0) vs. Brentwood (1-3-1) - 7:40 PM @ Centennial B
I’m not gonna lie, the Spartans’ loss to Hendersonville last Wednesday was kind of concerning. That felt like a game they should’ve won going in. I watched part of it, and, until the last three minutes, the Commandos were pretty much frustrating them. Now, they’re facing a Brentwood team that aren’t as good as Hendersonville, but could do the same. Jack Schultz will be back in the lineup for the Bruins tonight, as he missed last Wednesday’s game against Centennial due to suspension. If anyone can spark the Bruins to a much-needed win, it’s Schultz. But I think the Spartans will learn their lesson from last week.

Pick: Summit

Father Ryan (1-2-1) vs. Ensworth-Nolensville-Lipscomb (4-0-0) - 8:30 PM @ Bellevue-Crisp
These two teams played two very notable games in the span of 23 days earlier this year; yes, they’re dramatic meeting in the Preds Cup Winners’ Bracket Semifinal on Valentine’s Day, which Ensworth won 1-0 with just eight seconds left in overtime, is one, but their January 22 meeting, which the Irish won 3-2, deserves a mention, because that result had a major butterfly effect. That loss ended up being the catalyst that kept the Ice Tigers from being the Preds Cup 1 seed, which may have kept them from being upset by Ravenwood in the first round, and possibly missing out on the final altogether, let alone winning the whole thing.

Now, turning to tonight’s game, Ensworth have to now likely face Zach Fonnesbeck after having so much trouble with Keaton Howard last week. They were fortunate to get away with the win, but they might not be so lucky tonight. Irish freshman Gage Hart will have to be watched vigilantly by the Ice Tigers; he’s scored a goal in each of the Irish’s four games. Meanwhile, after their season-opening win over Centennial last month, Ensworth head coach Tim McAllister told me that they’ll be scoring “by committee” this season, having lost Ben Sonkin to graduation (as well as JT Borland and Justin Nozko). The “committee” is doing fine, as six players have five points or more; they’ll need to be putting the puck in the back of the net quite a bit tonight, or else, the Irish might beat them again.

Pick: Ensworth

Montgomery County Rangers (0-5-0) vs. Ravenwood (3-1-0) - 8:35 PM @ Centennial A
Ravenwood should be back to a full squad tonight after only skating ten against the Outlaws on Thursday (those ten still managed to get 33 shots off, and only allow the Outlaws to get off 14 themselves). I wouldn’t put it past them to score 20 goals on the Rangers, and not allow them to get off any shots.

Pick: Ravenwood
