Previewing tonight’s games

The game that MTSN is broadcasting is in BOLD.

Ravenwood (3-0-1) vs. JPII-MLK-GCS (0-2-1) - 4:45 PM @ Centennial A
The Raptors are, unsurprisingly, off to a good start. They picked up a big win against MBA last Monday in a game where they had to come from behind late. They’ll be heavy favorites against this JPII team, who are very likely headed for the Hine Cup. Ethan Hickerson, the Knights’ backup that they got in the goalie pool draft from the Rampage, will make his GNASH debut in goal today. It probably won’t be pretty, but hey, his parents pay a lot of money for him to participate in this league, so, he should get some playing time, even if it’s against the team at the top of the table.

Game prediction: Ravenwood

Page-Summit (1-2-1) vs. Brentwood-BA-USN (0-2-1) - 6:30 PM @ Centennial A
What a time for the Spartriots to face Brentwood. As I have pointed out a few times in this newsletter, Page lost 3-1 to Brentwood last October, despite outshooting them 40-8, because Andrew Sallee played in the Bruins’ crease like he was Terry Sawchuk. Now, Page face Brentwood on the heels of a two-game losing streak; last year’s loss to Brentwood kicked off a two-game losing streak that was subsequently coupled with a loss to Hendersonville. The good news for Page is, that top line of Schultz/Cesarone/C. Fielder is long gone; the bad news is, Sallee is still around. If the Spartriots lose this game, they’ll probably hit the panic button so hard, it’ll get stuck. They have no excuse to not win this one. They’ll be without Aiden Meyer, who is suspended for tonight’s game for saying bad words to an official last Monday.

Game prediction: Page

Mt. Juliet-Wilson Central-Lebanon (0-5-0) vs. Clarksville Kings (1-2-0) - 6:30 PM @ Bellevue-Crisp
Last Wednesday’s loss to the Outlaws summed up the Bears’ first third of the regular season: They outshot the OG modern-era supplemental team 35-18, but Dawson Reynolds wouldn’t let a fourth shot past him. Meanwhile, the Kings lost a goalfest to the Rampage 11-6, seeing Myles Thompson score four of those 11 RuCo goals. I’m guessing that the Hasse twins, Brock and Camden, will be able to play tonight. If they are, that tilts the game in the Kings’ direction for me. I don’t think the Bears have enough players to match their speed. This game could also devolve into a goalfest, but one that Clarksville will enjoy on this occasion.

Game prediction: Clarksville

Father Ryan (3-1-0) vs. Nolensville (3-0-1) - 7:40 PM @ Centennial B
The Irish have started the season very well; for the moment, my concerns about their roster size have been assuaged, as everyone seems healthy. They’ll probably feel that they should be 4-0-0, or at least 3-0-1, and I can’t really blame them. And they’re going up against a Nolensville team that has a similar roster size. But of course, when it comes to the Knights, there’s the Bingston Soundara factor. As long as he’s in their crease, they’re the favorites to win. If the Irish can solve him, I’d argue that it would be a bigger win than their Hine Cup Final triumph back in March. But he rarely makes mistakes, and beating him honestly is hard. I’ll pick Nolensville, but it really wouldn’t shock me at this point if Ryan were the team that finally beat him.

Game prediction: Nolensville

Station Camp-Liberty Creek-Nashville Christian (3-0-0) vs. Hendersonville-Beech-Lawson (3-1-0) - 8:15 PM @ Centennial A
The Bison have been the best story of the season’s very early days so far, with three wins out of three. Their win against a very talented but dysfunctional Page team last Monday made them a legit unbeaten team. Now, they’re facing a Hendersonville team that’s rebounded well from an Opening Night loss to Ravenwood by winning three straight, including a fine win over Franklin two weeks ago. I’d say the depth between these two is about even. The Bison’s Top 4 scorers aren’t surprises: Dom DeMaria, Tobyn Mehaffy, Tommy Siciliano, and Andrew Grooms (the numbers for DeMaria and Mehaffy are inflated from the blowout of Clarksville, but those are two guys you want going off in games like that). Meanwhile, the Commandos have three players with six points each, and while it’s not a surprise that Caden Sisco and Landon Croft are among them, senior newcomer Caleb Carlance being the third one is a shock. He has taken to this team very well, playing like he’s been there all four years. Another senior newcomer, Matthew Almeida, has been a big boost to the Commando defense, blocking shots, stealing pucks, throwing hits, and setting up scoring chances. I wouldn’t be surprised by either team winning, but I think that it’s Hendersonville keeping the winning streak going in this one.

Game prediction: Hendersonville

Franklin vs. Montgomery Bell (both 2-2-0) - 8:15 PM @ Bellevue-Crisp
Both teams have started the season exactly the same: Won their first two, lost their next two. They both lost to big guns last week: Franklin to Nolensville, and MBA to Ravenwood. For me, this is a bigger game for Franklin than it is for the Big Red. This is the fourth game of Michael Mannion’s six-game suspension, and this is another opponent they could absolutely use him against. The game will be physical from the Admirals’ end, no doubt, but the goaltending and defense need to be in ship-shape to deal with the likes of Matthew Moore and Trace Graham. They’ll likely get plenty of shots in on Tripp Bland, but can they get enough past him to take the win?

Game prediction: MBA
