Previewing tonight’s games

The games that MTSN are broadcasting are in BOLD.

Father Ryan (0-1-0) vs. Rutherford Rampage (0-1-0) - 5:30 PM @ Centennial B
Both teams lost last week in various ways. The Rampage got absolutely whipped by Summit-Page. The Irish, meanwhile, took a 2-0 lead over JPII-MLK late in the first period, only for David Bavas to score twice in the last 20 seconds of said first period to tie the game - his second goal coming with only one second to go - then, when it looked like they were about to leave with a point in the back pocket, Oscar Ford scored the game-winner with just 5 seconds to go in the game. Both teams are pretty young, but the Irish have better goaltending, and I’m not sure the Rampage can overcome that.

Pick: Father Ryan

JPII-MLK (1-0-0) vs. Montgomery County Rangers (0-2-0) - 7 PM @ Centennial B
The Knights nicely overcame a 2-0 deficit to Father Ryan last Monday to win their first game of the season in dramatic fashion. David Bavas and Oscar Ford look to be in midseason form already, as they were the Knights’ goalscorers. The goaltending is the one thing that the Knights need to stay consistent. Meanwhile, after losing 5-2 to Brentwood in their first-ever official GNASH game last Monday, the Rangers got coldly splashed in their first official game at their home rink in Clarksville by MBA. I don’t think JPII are on the Big Red’s level, but I wouldn’t exactly be on upset alert here, either.

Pick: JPII

Hendersonville-Beech-Lawson (1-0-0) vs. Franklin (1-0-0) - 7:40 PM @ Centennial A
Both teams not only won their season openers last week, they also each scored six goals in doing so (Hendersonville beat Indy 6-1, Franklin beat the Outlaws 6-3). Each team had a nice spread of scoring: Five different players scored for the Admirals, and four for the Commandos, so, this could be a close game where last save wins. It feels like Franklin are the better team, though. One note: Michael Mannion is out for the season with a shoulder injury; he is also only a junior, so, he’ll be back next season (blame the hockey team’s page on the FranklinAdmirals.com website; it was telling me he was a junior last year).

Pick: Franklin

Independence-BA-USN-Nashville Christian (0-1-0) vs. Tennessee Outlaws (0-1-0) - 8:30 PM @ Centennial B
Both teams lost last week; the difference is, one fought back. The Eagles lost 6-1 to Hendersonville in a game where the Commandos only finished with a 17-15 lead in shots. The Outlaws, meanwhile, scored three goals in the third period to push Franklin (for some reason, the box score says they only had eight shots on goal, and only one of those was in the third period; you know, the same period they happened to score three goals in). On paper, Indy has better players. But you don’t play games on paper; you play them on the ice.

Pick: Outlaws

Mt. Juliet-Wilson Central-Green Hill (0-0-1) vs. Summit-Page (1-0-0) - 8:30 PM @ Bellevue-Crisp
The Bears were unlucky to end up a in a 3-3 tie with Station Camp-Liberty Creek when the Bison scored the game-tying goal with 53 seconds left, but they were also kinda lucky to get away with the tie, as the Bison outshot them 30-27. Summit, meanwhile, crushed the Rampage 9-1 in a game where they only gave up 2 shot in the first, and 4 in the third (the Rampage somehow outshot the Spartans 11-7 in the second). The Bears are better than Rutherford, but I don’t think they’re better than Summit.

Pick: Summit
