Previewing tonight’s games
Both games are being played @ Centennial A. Teams without records next to their names are playing their first games of the season.
Mt. Juliet-Wilson Central-Lebanon (0-1-0) vs. Ensworth-Lipscomb-CPA - 7:10 PM
The Bears become the first team to play a second game this season, looking to bounce back after a rough outing against Franklin on Monday, and still looking to score their first goal of the season. They’re very likely going to be without Anthony Giampaolo, who, in one instance in Monday’s game, received a cross-checking minor, then got into a fight with Michael Mannion, and hit with two ten-minute misconducts. He’s not listed on the suspensions page on the GNASH website as I am typing this, but I don’t imagine he’ll be playing tonight.
With Nolensville departing their successful co-op, Ensworth and Lipscomb had a big hole to fill. And fill it, they did, bringing in some pretty good players as CPA comes into the fold. They pick up the scoring prowess of Clayton Roach for one season, as well as the services of Saxon Clements. With the Nolensville talent of Spencer Kern, Jackson Malleus-Mayer, and Henry Cravens moving on, this is now Trex Hooper’s offense as he goes into his farewell season. He’s got Jax Dooner, Lucas Tarquine, and Logan Green coming along with him, as well as Hudson Honeybone leading the defense for his final season. This team also has a lot of newcomers, including three 8th graders. There are a couple of downsides: Cam Fowler and Will Copeland will be mostly absent for a couple of months, as they are focusing on football at Lipscomb. They also only have one goalie: Reuben Allen will be the team’s lone netminder this season. He goes from having little playing time last season, to nearly all of it this season. I say nearly because he’s not playing tonight; Mattie Cox of the Outlaws, who is in the pool rotation and not on a team, will be in the crease for the Ice Tigers tonight. Tim McAllister returns for his ninth season as head coach of the Ensworth program (they were co-oping with Oakland for his first season, 2017-18), which actually means that he and JPII’s Justin Clark are tied for the distinction of GNASH’s longest-tenured head coach.
This game could devolve into a goal-fest.
Game prediction: Ensworth
JPII-MLK-GCS vs. Page-Summit - 8:40 PM
This is a pretty young JPII team, either as younger or even younger than Father Ryan. They only have one senior, Ian Sullivan, as Clayton Roach and Saxon Clements left to join up with Ensworth and Lipscomb, and the other would-be senior, Kade Ziemendorf, moved out of the state. Ziemendorf’s departure means that there are no more Franklin Grace Christian players, which also means that Anthony Pellegrino didn’t return for his senior season, either. Pellegrino didn’t play last season after being accepted into the Boston Hockey Academy. After not getting any playing time, Pellegrino came back to Nashville, but instead of returning to the ice, began focusing on his budding career as a hockey writer. He is now fully focused on it, creating a new platform called The Frozen Focus, and hosting its central web series, The Daily Focus. Thankfully, bringing Goodpasture into the mix (“GCS” stands for “Goodpasture Christian School”) has allowed them to pick up a goalie: Collier Owen, who was Brentwood’s backup last season, has a new home. However, they still had to dip into the goalie draft to get a second, taking in Riverdale freshman Ethan Hickerson from the Rampage. Another Goodpasture pickup is Michael McEver. Among the key returnees for this team include Joe Hiller, David Bavas, the Ford brothers Hugo and Oscar, Will Emerson, Reese Davidson, and Winston Walker. Carter Bahorik also returns after not playing last season. Justin Clark returns for his ninth season in charge of the JPII program (in his first season, which was also 2017-18, they were co-oping with CPA). This is a young team, but Clark is pretty good about creating chemistry and getting players to develop.
The Spartriots (that’s what I’m going to start calling them) return a whole heck of a lot of firepower in taking another shot at getting to the top of the mountain. Despite having to say goodbye to Zach Ellis and Sean Scott, they bring back Brayden Owen, Hunter Haley, Hudson Halters, Madden Chandler, Reeve Gabele, Elijah Selby, Ryan Ellis, Aiden Meyer, Aiden AND Liam Garner. The list goes on. And while they had to say goodbye to Seth Wagner, they filled that hole in their goaltending tandem very nicely, bringing in Justin Iannuccilli, who was in net for the Outlaws when they knocked JPII out of the Preds Cup back in February. Iannuccilli transferred from Spring Hill to Summit during the offseason, meaning he belongs to the team, and isn’t on-loan from Tennessee. Joining up with Brady Tessier means that this is quite possibly the best goaltending tandem in the league this season. However, they have ten seniors on their team this season, including both goalies, so, they’ll feel like this is the season to get it done. Greg Sauers returns for his fourth season in charge of this particular co-op, but his seventh in charge of the Summit program (in his first season, 2019-20, they were in a three-school co-op with Independence and Spring Hill, with Summit soon departing to be a scholastic team for 2020-21, and Sauers following them; for the 2021-22 season, Summit hooked up with Page and Station Camp, winning the Henry Hine Cup, then Station Camp immediately departed to link up with Liberty Creek, leaving Summit and Page together ever since).
Game prediction: Summit
