Recapping last night’s games
Beginning with today’s newsletter, there will be two records posted next to each of the six Tier 1 teams that can win the GNASH Cup: their second half record, then their GNASH Cup record.
Father Ryan 7 (1-0-0; 4-4-0), Pope Prep-MLK-GCA 6 (0-1-0; 3-5-0)
The Irish needed just 67 seconds to strike first, when Jack Halloran buried a rebound from a saved Colin Sullivan shot. The Knights needed just 17 seconds to tie it, when Saxon Clements made a perfect behind-the-back pass to Joe Hiller in the slot, and Hiller fired it into the roof of the net. Nearly four minutes later, Clements gave Pope the lead, and they were up 2-1 after one. Nearly four minutes into the second, Austin Hester tied the game off of a faceoff, when he somehow managed to shoot the puck into the roof of the net from laying on the ice after falling over. The Knights retook the lead just 28 seconds later, when they took advantage of a waved-off icing, as Carter Bahorik buried a saved Coleman Glidewell shot. Near the halfway point of the second, Hester scored his second, when he netted the rebound from a saved Colin Sullivan shot. The Irish then won the subsequent faceoff, and Colton Edwards scored on a backhand that seemed to slowly float into the back of the net just 11 seconds later. Nearly two minutes later, Pope tied the game, when a Kade Ziemendorf shot from the point went in off of Erik Kihlberg’s right leg. But the Irish took the lead for good with 20 seconds left in the period, when Sam Halloran scored his first GNASH goal on the power play from the left circle of the Knights’ zone. With just over four-and-a-half minutes left, Colin Sullivan scored on the power play when he buried an Edwards centering pass. 82 seconds later, Ian Sullivan brought the Knights within one when his shot from the right point bounced over the left leg of Irish goaltender Riley Barnes and went in. Nearly two minutes later, Edwards scored his second, a short-handed empty netter from the left half-wall of his own zone. That turned out to be the game-winner, as Kihlberg added a second in a four-on-four situation with 53.5 seconds to go to bring the game to its final score.
So, the Irish complete a regular season sweep of their big Catholic school rivals, and it’s another hard-to-swallow defeat for Pope. Riley Barnes played the entire game in goal for Father Ryan, his first GNASH start, as Zach Fonnesbeck wasn’t even in the building. Barnes got a lot of help from the top line of Hester, Edwards, and Sullivan, as they scored five of the Irish’s goals. They’ll need that type of game from their leading scorers tomorrow, when they take on Franklin. Meanwhile, Pope have to tighten up their defense. Pretty much every Father Ryan goal except for Edwards’s empty netter and Sam Halloran’s tally, which came from the outside, happened because the defense let an Irish player get to the front of the net without being noticed, or didn’t do enough on the backcheck.
Next game for both teams
Father Ryan: Tomorrow vs. Franklin - 8:40 PM @ Centennial A
Pope Prep-MLK-GCA: TBA
Ensworth-Nolensville-Lipscomb 2 (0-0-1), Montgomery Bell 2 (0-0-1; 6-0-2)
Matthew Moore opened the scoring just over two minutes in, when he ripped a wrister past Reuben Allen to give the Big Red a 1-0 lead. MBA doubled the lead just over two minutes into the second, when Lee Guy hammered a Trace Graham centering pass into the back of the net. The Ice Tigers would make up the deficit later in the second. First, in his first game of the season, Jax Dooner managed to float the puck into the roof of the net from the high slot; this came three seconds shy of the halfway point of the period and game. Then, nearly four minutes later, Justin Nozko tied the game on a netmouth scramble. From there, Hunter Wieck withstood every Ensworth attack - just as he did against Franklin - and ended the game with 43 saves on 45 shots. Duke D’Alba had a chance to put MBA up 3-2 in the third, but missed on a point blank chance. That miss could be the difference in the GNASH Cup race, as well as the race for the Preds Cup 1 seed. And Ravenwood better be ready for Ensworth tomorrow, because if these Ice Tigers show up, they’ll batter the Raptors.
Next game for both teams
Ensworth-Nolensville-Lipscomb: Tomorrow vs. Ravenwood - 9:15 PM @ Antioch-South
Montgomery Bell: Tomorrow vs. Mt. Juliet-Wilson Central-Green Hill - 8:30 PM @ Centennial B
Summit-Page 11 (1-0-0), Mt. Juliet-Wilson Central-Green Hill 7 (0-1-0; 2-5-1)
This is a head-scratching result for the Golden Bears, who have been very stingy on defense for most of the season so far. The Spartans were up 4-0 near the midway point of the first, with two goals from Aiden Garner - the first of which came just 39 seconds in - being followed up by tallies from Zach Ellis and Brayden Owen. Then it was the Bears’ turn to score four in the first, as goals from Carson Slocum and Jordan Antar preceded two Rylan Cripe goals, and it was 4-4 after one. Summit then scored three in a row to start the second, as a Cody Lightfoot goal just 81 seconds into the middle frame was followed up by Ellis’s second just 29 seconds later. Near the midway point, Garner completed his hat trick to make it 7-4. Mt. Juliet then got back within one, with Anthony Giampaolo finding the back of the net 26 seconds after Garner’s third, and then a second from Antar nearly six minutes later. James Gilmartin put Summit back up by two 67 seconds later, and it was 8-6 after two. Antar completed his hat trick 84 seconds into the third to get MJ back within one, and the 8-7 score held until Garner scored his fourth with just over four minutes to go. 2:06 later, Elijah Selby scored his first GNASH goal, with Garner’s fifth being the final tally with 45 seconds left. Again, a mystifying loss for Mt. Juliet, and now, if they lose to MBA tomorrow night, they are officially out of GNASH Cup contention. Not that they were going to win it anyway, considering their record coming into this game.

Summit-Page: TBA
Mt. Juliet-Wilson Central-Green Hill: Tomorrow vs. Montgomery Bell - 8:30 PM @ Centennial B
Tennessee Outlaws 3 (1-0-0), USN-BA-Nashville Christian-FRA-Goodpasture 2 (0-1-0)
After neither team scored in the first, Nico Pulley opened the scoring just 78 seconds into the second. The 1-0 score held up until very late in the period, when Ryan Barrett scored with just over a minute left to tie the game. However, the Outlaws managed to take the lead back right before the end of the middle frame, when Jacob Schenk potted his first goal with just nine seconds to go. Schenk added his second - and the game-winner - just 46 seconds into the third, and the 3-1 score lasted until 15 seconds to go, when Barrett scored the last goal. A much closer game than the November 1 meeting, when the Outlaws won 5-1, but Tennessee still complete a regular season sweep of USN.

Tennessee Outlaws: Tomorrow vs. Centennial - 7:10 PM @ Centennial A
USN-BA-Nashville Christian-FRA-Goodpasture: Tomorrow vs. Brentwood - 7:30 PM @ Antioch-North
Rutherford Rampage 2 (1-0-0), Independence-Ravenwood 2 0 (0-1-0)
Thanks to Trent Pavlik, the Rampage couldn’t get the puck in the net until Cooper Feasel scored the game-winner just over four minutes into the second. The 1-0 score held up until three seconds left in the game, when Tucker Wilhelm added an empty-netter. New Rutherford goalie Alec Dawes picked up a 15-save shutout in his GNASH debut. A good start to the Rampage’s return to Tier 2.

TBA for both
Hendersonville-Beech-Gallatin 7 (1-0-0), Station Camp-Liberty Creek 5 (0-2-0)
A much higher-scoring game than the 1-0 Commandos victory on October 11. This time, it was the Bison opening the scoring, as Joey Siciliano opened the scoring nearly four minutes in. Just past the halfway point of the opening period, Colin Smith tied the game, and nearly four minutes later, Merrick Mott gave Hendersonville the lead, and it was 2-1 after one. Justin Schaefer made it 3-1 just over two minutes into the second, before Station Camp rattled off three unanswered goals from Austin Givens, McClain Gregory, and Jadon Robertson, respectively, to give the Bison a 4-3 lead after two. Just before the halfway point of the third, the older Siciliano brother scored his second goal of the game to make it 5-3 Station Camp, and it looked like the Bison would avenge the October 11 defeat. But the Commandos’ comeback began just 54 seconds later, when Gideon Drobnick brought them within one. Then he tied the game 2:19 later, before Josh Lodl scored the game-winner with 1:57 left, then Drobnick completed his hat trick with an empty netter with 17 seconds to go. The Commandos are now on a four-game winning streak, and a seven-game unbeaten streak, but they had to fight to keep those alive on this night.
