Recapping last night’s games

There are two records for the six Tier 1 teams that can win the GNASH Cup: their second half record, and their GNASH Cup record.

There is no “Next game for both teams” section in this newsletter, as the schedule for the next week of play won’t be published until some time later this week or weekend.

Centennial 4 (2-0-0), Tennessee Outlaws 3 (1-1-0)
Rhett Gordon scored the first goal just under four minutes into the game, and the Cougars carried a 1-0 lead into the second. They needed just 62 seconds of the middle frame to double their lead, with Aiden Knecht scoring the tally. 82 seconds later, Dalton Alejandro got the Outlaws on the board, and just after the halfway point of the second, Josh Kuehn tied the game. Centennial took the lead back for good in the third, when Gordon scored his second just before the midway point, then completed his hat trick just over four minutes later. Alejandro scored the game’s final goal just 36 seconds after that. A good start to the second half for Centennial, as they complete a regular season sweep of the Outlaws.

USN-BA-Nashville Christian-FRA-Goodpasture 5 (1-1-0), Brentwood 1 (0-1-0)
Aidan Pustizzi opened the scoring just past the halfway point of the first, with ex-Bruin Barrett Teasdale tying the game just under two minutes later on a power play, and it was 1-1 after the first. Mitchell Proffitt scored the game-winner on a power play just over two minutes into the second, with Ryan Barrett making it 3-1 USN nearly three minutes later, and that score held up through the end of the period. Just over two minutes into the third, Brody Wales made it 4-1, and Barrett scored his second exactly eight minutes later to bring the game to its final score. Ben Schwarz made 29 saves on 30 Brentwood shots; Bruins backup Andrew Sallee made his first start since the loss to Pope Prep-MLK-GCA on October 23, making 25 saves on 30 shots. The Bruins’ scoring woes continue.

Mt. Juliet-Wilson Central-Green Hill 3 (0-1-1; 2-5-2), Montgomery Bell 3 (0-0-2; 6-0-3)
A great bounce back from the 11-7 loss to Summit on Monday by the Bears. Ryan Woods, back from being suspended for that Summit game after receiving a kicking match penalty against Ravenwood last Wednesday, opened the scoring with just under three minutes left in the first; 29 seconds later, Jordan Antar made it 2-0 on a shorthanded tally. 85 seconds later, with MJ still on the kill, Lee Guy converted the power play, and it was 2-1 Bears after one. Just under two minutes into the second, Parker Triplett put Mt. Juliet up 3-1, before Guy scored his second more than a minute-and-a-half later, and it was 3-2 after two. Now, I had the Big Red Broadcasting video stream open for the third period so I could keep one eye on it while doing the Father Ryan-Franklin game, so that’s how I can describe these next two happenings. First, there was a delay early in the third for a loose pane of glass. Then, Matthew Moore scored the final goal just over three minutes into the last frame, burying a rebound from a saved Edwin Bass shot. The most shocking stat from this game is the fact that Mt. Juliet outshot MBA 42-21! Once again, MBA had to shine the Wieck Signal. Not a good start to the second half for the Big Red; yes, ties aren’t losses, but they need to win games to keep up with a Franklin team starting to soar. If the Admirals keep winning and MBA keep slipping back, the Big Red’s GNASH Cup hopes will turn into dust in no time flat. Speaking of GNASH Cup, this tie keeps Mt. Juliet in contention, but just barely; they’ll be knocked out when we return to play after Thanksgiving.

Franklin 5 (1-0-0; 7-0-1), Father Ryan 0 (1-1-0; 4-5-0)
Gavin Akers scored the first goal of the game 76 seconds in, going coast-to-coast from his own end boards after nearly turning the puck over to Harper Howard in front of his own net. The 1-0 score held up until very late in the second, when Maclaine Butters buried a rebound from a saved Quinn Spencer shot. In the final minute of the second, Owen McGroarty made it 3-0, when he scored on the third shot attempt from the side of the net after Irish goalie Zach Fonnesbeck stopped the first two. Butters scored his second of the game one second shy of the midway point of the third, and then Brandon Mills scored a shorty with 15 seconds left, after a quick slapper from the left circle. Franklin’s defense was merciless, clamping down on the Irish big time, and they absolutely stifled the Hester-Edwards-Sullivan top line. Grayson Butters was in net, and recorded his second shutout of the season. Oddly enough, it was backup Chad Janson shutting out the Irish in the first meeting on October 25. A great win for the Admirals, who continue to pick up steam.

Ensworth-Nolensville-Lipscomb 7 (1-0-1), Ravenwood 4 (0-1-0; 3-5-0)
Spencer Kern scored the first goal just 97 seconds into the game, and Ben Sonkin made it 2-0 nearly nine minutes later, and that was the score heading into the second. The Ice Tigers needed just 20 seconds of the second to go up 3-0, as Brandon Bello got his second goal of the season. Jake Lapinsky put Ravenwood on the board just 24 seconds later, but any hopes of a comeback were snuffed out by Ensworth, as Sonkin scored his second goal just 54 seconds later. Nearly eight minutes after that, Jax Dooner made it 5-1, and just over two minutes after that, JT Borland put the Ice Tigers up 6-1. 49 seconds after Borland’s goal, Owen Appel stopped the bleeding, scoring his first of the season to have Ensworth up 6-2 after two. Jack Ready got Ravenwood within three just 55 seconds into the third, but Jackson Malleus-Mayer answered just 35 seconds later. Lapinsky scored the game’s final goal with just 13 seconds left. So, thanks to a win and a tie, Ensworth are in the lead in the second half standings. It’s going to be very interesting to see where they finish from here. Cooper Hill wasn’t on the ice for the Raptors, but, I don’t think his absence made a difference. Ravenwood just don’t have it this season.
