Recapping last night’s games

For the six Tier 1 teams that are competing for the GNASH Cup, two records are posted next to their score: their second half record, and their GNASH Cup record. If a team’s GNASH Cup record has an asterisk (*) next to it, that means that team is no longer in GNASH Cup contention.

Brentwood 6 (1-1-0), Independence-Ravenwood 2 1 (0-2-0)
The Bruins collected their first win as a Tier 2 team, thanks to a four-goal first period. Aidan Pustizzi scored the opening goal one second shy of two-and-a-half minutes into the game, with Jonny Kelso scoring his first GNASH goal just 19 seconds later to make it 2-0. Nearly two minutes later, Callahan Fielder made it 3-0, and Pustizzi added his second almost eight minutes after that, and Brentwood exited the first period with a 4-0 lead. With just under four minutes left in the second, Owen Seeley gave Brentwood a 5-0 lead, with Torrin Kemble breaking the shutout 45 seconds later, and it was 5-1 Bruins after two. Jack Schultz scored the game’s final goal just over three minutes into the third. Brentwood win a game they absolutely should’ve. Is this the start of a turnaround? Time will tell, but it’s a good sign that the players are giving an effort.

Next game for both teams
Brentwood: Next Monday vs. Station Camp-Liberty Creek - 8:30 PM @ Centennial B
Independence-Ravenwood 2: Tomorrow vs. Tennessee Outlaws - 8:40 PM @ Centennial A

Centennial 5 (3-0-0), USN-BA-Nashville Christian-FRA-Goodpasture 2 (1-2-0)
Owen Boyer scored the game’s first goal just past the halfway point of the first period, and it was 1-0 Cougars after one. Boyer added a second on the power play just past the midway point of the second, before Joey Fried scored his first GNASH goal just over four minutes later to get USN on the board. Unfortunately for them, they took a penalty towards the end of the second period, and Brendan Mitchell converted the power play with 22 seconds left in the middle frame, meaning Centennial had a 3-1 lead after two. USN got back within one near the midway point of the third, when Drake Hughes scored his first GNASH goal to make it 3-2. USN got a power play very late in the third, and pulled Ben Schwarz in an effort to tie the game, but it backfired. Blake Butcher made it 4-2 Centennial with 69 seconds to go, and 19 seconds later, with the net empty again, Aiden Gardner scored the game’s final goal. So, the Cougars avenge the heartbreaking October 4 loss by doing what they needed to do: jump out front, and hang on, and shut down USN’s big guns. They are the clear favorites for the Hine Cup 1 seed right now, but they have a tough game against the Rampage tomorrow.

Next game for both teams
Centennial: Tomorrow vs. Rutherford Rampage - 9:15 PM @ Antioch-North
USN-BA-Nashville Christian-FRA-Goodpasture: Tomorrow vs. Station Camp-Liberty Creek - 7:30 PM @ Antioch-North

Franklin 7 (2-0-0, 8-0-1), Ravenwood 2 (0-2-0, 3-6-0*)
Much to my surprise, during the Thanksgiving break, Ravenwood dismissed their entire coaching staff, bringing in James Gately, who coached the old USN-DCA-MLK co-op in its first season, 2018-19, to replace Mike Driscoll as head coach. I really think that coaching isn’t the problem with the Raptors, but that’s a thought train for another day. Anyway, Ravenwood actually did a good job holding Franklin back for almost six minutes, until Gavin Akers scored the opening goal while falling down shooting in the left circle after a loose puck ended up on his stick. Then everything fell apart for Ravenwood. The Admirals won the subsequent faceoff, and Cael Lewis pushed the puck around Anthony Maltese, got it back in the left circle, and then banked it in off the inside of Brady Miller’s left shin, and it was 2-0 Franklin eight seconds after Akers’s goal. 19 seconds later, Grant Hays made it 3-0 when he backhanded the puck into the roof of the net. In a 27-second span, Franklin scored three times, and won the game. Owen Appel scored on the power play just over five minutes later, when his shot from the blue line went in off the underside of the crossbar, but 25 seconds later, Franklin scored again when Quinn Lohse raced to the front of the net to score on a rebound from a saved Aidan Murphy shot, and it was 4-1 Admirals after the first. Exactly nine minutes into the second, Hays scored his second goal of the game when he got the puck right in front of the net, and slid it underneath Miller. Just over three minutes later, Brandon Mills scored on a netmouth scramble after Miller saved a Kasper Thuresson shot, and it was 6-1 Franklin. 19 seconds later, Liam Powell scored when he managed to roof a loose puck that Admirals defenders had trouble clearing away from the front of the net. It was 6-2 Franklin after two. The final goal came on a shorthanded 3-on-0 rush, as Hudson Richards buried a Quinn Lohse centering pass. Miller was furious, raising his arms in frustration at the Ravenwood bench over his teammates allowed such a thing to happen on the power play. The result means that Ravenwood’s GNASH Cup defense is over, as they are now out of contention for the regular season championship. Mt. Juliet-Wilson Central-Green Hill are also now out, but, the Raptors are the far bigger story.

Ravenwood: Tomorrow vs. Father Ryan - 7:10 PM @ Centennial A

Rutherford Rampage 4 (2-0-0), Hendersonville-Beech-Gallatin 0 (1-1-0)
Justin Dickinson needed just 27 seconds to score what turned out to be the game-winning goal, adding a second just 4:01 later, and the Rampage had a 2-0 lead after the first. He completed his hat trick just 56 seconds into the second, and just over nine minutes later, Cody Jones scored the game’s final goal. Alec Dawes turned away all 21 Commandos shots, as Hendersonville’s four-game winning streak and seven-game unbeaten streak were emphatically snapped. Nice start to the second half for the Rampage, who are not only 2-0, but have also outscored their Tier 2 opposition 6-0 so far. Tomorrow’s game against Centennial will be an intriguing one.

Mt. Juliet-Wilson Central-Green Hill 6 (1-1-1, 3-5-2*), Ensworth-Nolensville-Lipscomb 2 (1-1-1)
Trenten Gorrell scored the opening goal with just under five minutes left in the first period, and the Bears held a 1-0 lead after one. Just over four minutes into the second, Carson Slocum added to the lead, and just over three minutes later, Jacob Thomas had Mt. Juliet leading 3-0. With just under three minutes left in the second, Cam Fowler got the Ice Tigers on the board, with Henry Cravens scoring to bring Ensworth within a goal 35 seconds later. Jordan Antar cut off Ensworth’s hopes of coming back 85 seconds later with another MJ goal, and the Bears were up 4-2 after two. Just over two minutes into the third, Ryan Woods made it 5-2, with Parker Triplett scoring the game’s final goal eight minutes later. This is an excellent result for Mt. Juliet, especially with them spreading the scoring around. Are we about to see another late season charge by the Bears? Time will tell. Meanwhile, Ensworth get a wakeup call after a great first week as a Tier 1 team where they tied MBA and beat Ravenwood. It’s not going to be that great all the time, and now, they have to play Franklin next Wednesday.

Pope Prep-MLK-GCA 4 (1-1-0, 4-5-0), Summit-Page 2 (1-1-0)
After a couple of early rushes from the Spartans, Kade Ziemendorf scored the game’s first goal 1:41 in, firing the puck into the back of the net from Summit’s left circle. Nearly three minutes later, Joe Hiller made it 2-0 when he intercepted a cross-ice pass attempt from Hunter Haley, and raced to the net all alone in the slot. Jack Davis made it 3-0 right at the halfway point of the first, scoring from the right circle. The Knights scored three times on their first four shots. The 3-0 advantage carried all the way over to the third, when Aiden Meyer put Summit on the board just 55 seconds into the final frame, backhanding the puck into the roof of the net after faking out Anthony Pellegrino with a shot attempt. Exactly six minutes later, Clayton Roach took advantage of a failed clearing attempt by the Spartans to restore Pope’s three-goal lead. With just under three minutes left, Meyer scored again, this time on the power play, as he shot the puck into the roof of the net from the bottom of Pope’s right circle. That was the game’s final goal. It was a great game in particular for Pellegrino, having a tremendous bounce back start after the difficult game against Ryan two weeks ago. And Summit easily have more depth than the Irish do. Can Pope carry this forward? We’ll see.
