MTSN GNASH Newsletter for November 6, 2023

Since there is only one game tonight, and MTSN is covering it, the broadcast link is included in the game preview.

Previewing tonight’s game

Mt. Juliet-Wilson Central-Green Hill (1-3-1) vs. Father Ryan (3-3) - 7:40 PM @ Centennial A (MTSN coverage begins at 7:35 PM - BROADCAST LINK)
And so, we’ve hit the homestretch in the race to stay in Tier 1. This is a crucial game for Mt. Juliet, but not must-win. That comes on Wednesday against Ravenwood if they don’t win tonight. Now, we’ve harped on The Woods’ inability to produce offense, but that’s come in games against primo opponents (Brentwood AND Ravenwood both had trouble scoring against Franklin and Montgomery Bell; Brentwood had trouble scoring against Ravenwood and Pope Prep-MLK-GCA; and Ravenwood could only get one goal against Father Ryan). But the Golden Bears’ lack of production is off the charts shocking. The fact that they’re 1-3-1 is insane. They’ve only scored seven goals. SEVEN! And in only one of their five games have they scored more than once - their 4-0 win over Rutherford Rampage on October 11. In three of their other four games, they’ve only scored one goal in each: A 2-1 loss to Pope on September 25, a 2-1 loss to MBA on October 18, and the 1-1 tie with Brentwood on October 25, their most recent game. What’s even crazier is the fact that they’ve only allowed 11 goals, and six of those came in the one game where they got shut out: The 6-0 loss to Franklin on September 27. So, their defense is stingy, their goaltending is stout, but their offense lacks power. A really weird two-out-of-three-ain’t-bad scenario. Meanwhile, the Irish are playing their first half finale, their first game since losing to 3-0 to Franklin on October 25. And, frankly, a 3-0 loss to the Admirals is a bounce-back from the week before, where they lost 7-0 to Brentwood and 8-3 to MBA. Before the Franklin game, they beat Rutherford 7-1 two nights before. That means they’ve lost three of their last four, not great for a team that opened their season with two very impressive wins over Ravenwood and Pope where they won 5-1 and 4-1, respectively. What I wonder is, who the Irish will go with in net? Zach Fonnesbeck has started every game, while Riley Barnes only played the final 4:58 against Brentwood. I wouldn’t be surprised if Kyle Dora decided to let Barnes have a start in the crease tonight, even though that could put their GNASH Cup hopes at risk (although, considering the Irish already have three losses, while MBA AND Franklin are both 6-0-1, those chances might be longshot by this point).

I’m picking Mt. Juliet to win this one, which would then put Ravenwood in a must-at-least-tie situation for Wednesday.
