Ryan Woods opened the scoring 1:59 in with a beautiful, coast-to-coast power play goal, where he took the puck from behind his own goal line, carried it through center, and split the last two Irish defenders, backhanding past Zach Fonnesbeck into the back of the net. Just over two minutes later, Austin Hester scored a power play goal for Father Ryan, shooting a rebound from a blocked Marek McCullars shot past Noah Smartt. 68 seconds later, the Bears retook the lead, when Carson Slocum redirected a centering pass from Parker Triplett into the back of the net. The 2-1 score held up through the end of the period. Near the midway point of the second, the Irish tied the game on a 2-on-1 shorthanded opportunity, when Colton Edwards redirected a Hester centering pass past Smartt. Just over 40 seconds later, the Irish swapped goaltenders, allowing Riley Barnes to finish out the game. Barnes’s only appearance prior to last night was October 18, when he was brought in to play the final 4:58 of Ryan’s 7-0 loss to Brentwood. It was 2-2 after two periods, but the Bears got a power play 65 seconds into the third, and converted it just 16 seconds later, when Barnes had a Ryan Woods shot go off his glove, land in the crease, and Slocum was able to backhand it in to score the winning goal. For the Bears, this was an important result. Their goal differential, which will come into play tomorrow night if they lose to Ravenwood, is now -3; 10 goals scored, 13 allowed, compared to Brentwood’s -6. For the Irish, it’s a bitter pill to swallow. After getting out to a 2-0 start, they lost four of their last five. This pretty much means the GNASH Cup race will come down to Franklin and Montgomery Bell, unless someone can make a charge, because the other four challengers will either be six, seven, or eight points back when the second half of the regular season rolls around, and the Admirals and Big Red look far too strong to falter (especially Franklin).
