Previewing tonight’s games
Games being broadcast by MTSN are in BOLD. All of tonight’s games are being played @ Bellevue-Crisp (formerly Rink 1).
Independence-Ravenwood 2 (0-1-0) vs. USN-BA-Nashville Christian-FRA-Goodpasture (0-0-1) - 5:15 PM
Both teams experienced different feelings last Monday. Independence lost to the Outlaws in a game where they got within 2-1 after a Torrin Kemble goal on a 5-on-3, only for the Outlaws to score two goals in nine seconds soon after to extend the lead to 4-1, then go up 6-1 in the second period. Meanwhile, USN tied 5-5 with Station Camp-Liberty Creek in a game where Brody Wales scored the goal that confirmed the tie with just seven seconds left. I didn’t see the game between USN and Station Camp, obviously, because it was at Centennial, and I was at Bellevue, but looking at the scoresheet, they lost leads of 3-1 and 4-3, ending up just seconds away from losing 5-4 before Wales’s goal. On the other hand, I was impressed at how Indy improved defensively over the course of the game against the Outlaws, not allowing any goals in the third. Unfortunately for USN, they will be without junior Barrett Teasdale, who scored twice last week against Station Camp, but took a high-sticking major midway through the third, earning him a suspension for tonight’s contest.
I’m taking Indy in this one.
Montgomery Bell vs. Pope Prep-MLK-GCA - 6:45 PM
The Big Red opened their season last Wednesday with a high-scoring 6-4 win over Rutherford where they took control of the game for good in the second period. Trace Graham already looks like he’s in midseason form, as he had a second period hat trick, the third goal being the game winner. His linemates, Matthew Moore and Lee Guy, also scored, while the sixth goal came from freshman Duke D’Alba. The Knights played twice last week, in the meantime, having a rollercoaster of results. First, they scratched out a 2-1 win over Mt. Juliet-Wilson Central-Green Hill in a defensive battle, only to turn around on Wednesday and drop a 4-1 decision to Father Ryan where Zach Fonnesbeck turned aside 29 of their 30 shots. The Knights finally got their goal after falling behind 4-0. This feels like it could be a close game, and that, to me, favors the Big Red.
Yeah, give me MBA.
Ravenwood vs. Franklin - 8:20 PM
Both teams are playing their third game out of four over ten-day stretch, with Ravenwood finishing up against Mt. Juliet on Wednesday, while Franklin will be playing Pope on the rink next door in Antioch. The Raptors went from being dominated to being dominant in a span of just over 50 hours. First, they lost 5-1 to Father Ryan, being frustrated that they could only get the puck past Zach Fonnesbeck once (they actually put the puck in twice, but a would-be Brady Friedman goal in the first period was waved off for offside). Then, on Wednesday, they beat up on a Brentwood team that looks like they won’t be among GNASH’s best this season. The Admirals had a perfect week, beating Brentwood 5-2 on Monday in a game where they never trailed, and then posting a 6-0 triumph over Mt. Juliet on Wednesday, a game they ran off with in the third after scoring four goals. They look as good as advertised, but this will be a test of their early season resolve, especially when a win will very likely be good enough to keep them in Tier 1 for the rest of the regular season and gain a Predators Cup berth for the postseason (winning tonight and then on Wednesday to start 4-0 would make that all but official). Will Cooper Hill play? His absence or participation could make the difference.
I like the way the Admirals look, though, and, I think they’ll win this one.
