Previewing tonight’s games

Games that will be broadcast by MTSN are in BOLD.

Brentwood (1-4-0) vs. Mt. Juliet-Wilson Central-Green Hill (1-3-0) - 7:10 PM @ Centennial A
Well, here we are: Brentwood in a must-win situation (a tie would also go a long way towards Tier 1 salvation). A loss combined with a Ravenwood win against Rutherford would sink Brentwood to Tier 2 when the second half of the season rolls around, and they would be playing in the Hine Cup. The. HINE. Cup! The Bruins have never played in the Hine Cup as long as it has existed, and even though they would be heavy favorites to win it, it’s not what they’re about. After their 7-0 win against Father Ryan last Wednesday, the Bruins looked poised to take a second straight win against Pope Prep-MLK-GCA. They threw everything at the Pope net from the get-go, but goalie Anthony Pellegrino turned it all away, and the Knights finally converted some of their scoring chances to win 4-0, putting Brentwood in this position. The thing is, Brentwood are not bad. Not at all. Their top line is terrifying, and their second line is pretty decent, too. The problem has been their defense and goaltending have let them down at the worst possible moments. They wore down Father Ryan from the beginning of that game; that was the difference there. Meanwhile, Mt. Juliet are also a team that looks better than their record. Outside of the 6-0 loss to Franklin, they’ve lost 2-1 to both Pope and MBA. Oh, and also the 4-0 win over Rutherford. Their problem, like Brentwood’s, is not enough scoring, and having a goal scored against them at the worst possible time. Depending upon the goaltending matchup, this could be another tough, low-scoring affair.

I think I’ll pick Brentwood.

Ensworth-Nolensville-Lipscomb (4-0-0) vs. Tennessee Outlaws (1-1-1) - 7:30 PM @ Antioch-North
Ensworth returned from a 19-day layoff with a 6-0 whipping of USN-BA-Nashville Christian-FRA-Goodpasture on Monday. They have scored 26 goals and allowed four, all of which came in the game against Indy. They absolutely look like a team that will be moving up to Tier 1 at the midway point of the season. I thought the Outlaws would be a contender for the other spot, but they have now blown multi-goal leads in back-to-back games. They lost a 3-0 lead (that they had at the halfway point of the first period) against Hendersonville-Beech-Gallatin, and that game ended in a tie; and last Wednesday, they had a 2-0 lead on Centennial and lost 4-2. Now, they have to face the best offense in Tier 2, and they can’t afford another loss, especially with their game against Summit-Page occurring two weeks from today. They have to take a lead over Ensworth and hold on to it. Unfortunately, I’m not sure they will.

Yeah, give me Ensworth.

Rutherford Rampage (0-5-0) vs. Ravenwood (1-2-0) - 8:15 PM @ Antioch-South
Ravenwood finally get back on the ice after having last played 23 days ago, when they got whipped by Franklin 7-3. Rutherford last played just two days ago, losing 7-1 to Father Ryan. Now, I watched that game, and it was tied 1-1 after the first period. It got away from Rutherford in the second period, when the Irish scored twice, before Ryan piled on the last four goals in the third. The Rampage actually outshot the Irish, but Zach Fonnesbeck returned to the form he showed in Ryan’s first two games of the season against Ravenwood and Pope. Now, they have to face an offense finally getting back to gameplay after three weeks off. Who will Ravenwood put in goal is the question here. If it’s freshman Colin Gower, Rutherford could be on for a steal if they get enough shots on him. But they would also have to defend well against a Ravenwood team that has a lot of fast players.

I’m saying Raptors to win.

Franklin (4-0-1) vs. Father Ryan (3-2-0) - 8:30 PM @ Centennial B
The Admirals outshot Montgomery Bell 36-16 in a 1-1 tie on Monday, but Hunter Wieck put on a masterclass in goal, and kept them from scoring another. Meanwhile, Father Ryan snapped the two-game losing streak, beating Rutherford 7-1. As I said in the RuCo-Ravenwood preview, Ryan didn’t dominate the entire game. In fact, they only ran off with the game in the third period. Zach Fonnesbeck had to be strong against the Rampage attack. He saved 25 of 26 shots. He’s probably going to see a lot of shots again tonight.

Franklin is my pick.

Centennial (2-2-1) vs. Independence-Ravenwood 2 (0-5-0) - 8:40 PM @ Centennial A
The Cougars need to win this game to give themselves a shot at moving up to Tier 1 because their first half finale is on Monday against Ensworth, and Summit still have two games left to play after Monday. A tie wouldn’t cripple their chances, but it wouldn’t help. Centennial are on a three-game unbeaten streak, a 4-4 tie with Hendersonville leading into back-to-back wins against the Outlaws and Station Camp-Liberty Creek. I expect the streak to continue against an Indy team that’s scored one goal in their last two, and have already claimed their place in Tier 2 for the rest of the regular season.

Yeah, I’m picking Centennial.
