Previewing tonight’s games

Games that are being broadcast by MTSN are in BOLD. Remember that the Mt. Juliet-Wilson Central-Green Hill vs. Ravenwood game - scheduled to have been played tonight at 8:15 PM on Antioch-South - has been moved to Wednesday, November 8; same time, same location.

USN-BA-Nashville Christian-FRA-Goodpasture (1-0-1) vs. Centennial (0-1-0) - 7:10 PM @ Centennial A
After a tie to open the season last week against Station Camp-Liberty Creek, USN managed to grind out a 2-1 win over Independence-Ravenwood 2 on Monday with only 10 skaters and no Barrett Teasdale because of a suspension. He should be back tonight. Centennial, meanwhile, carried a 2-1 lead out of the first period in their opening game against Summit-Page a week ago Monday, only for the Spartans take over the game with a four-goal second period, then add two more in the third to win 7-3. Even worse for Centennial, they suffered on the scoresheet when it came to penalties. Their big physical presence, Rhett Gordon, who transferred during the summer from Independence, picked up four penalties in the game against Summit, while Cooper Davis was ejected for a facemask penalty. They’ll both be suspended for the game tonight. Despite that, I still think Centennial are the favorites. They have better players than Station Camp or Indy - particularly the likes of Aiden Knecht and Calvin Zacharias - and look like a fast team on paper.

I’ll pick the Cougars.

Franklin (3-0-0) vs. Pope Prep-MLK-GCA (1-2-0) - 7:30 PM @ Antioch-North
The Admirals have steamrolled the likes of Brentwood, Mt. Juliet, and Ravenwood to start the season perfectly. Meanwhile, Pope have ground out a win over Mt. Juliet, followed by back-to-back losses to Father Ryan and Montgomery Bell, the latter defeat much tighter than the former. Franklin have a better all-around team, but Pope could give them a few issues, especially Anthony Pellegrino in goal. Both teams are finally wrapping up a four-games-over-ten-days stretch. Here’s what stinks for Franklin about the Mt. Juliet-Ravenwood postponement: If the Admirals had won tonight, along with MBA beating Brentwood, and Ravenwood beating MJ, Franklin would’ve become the first team to clinch a spot in Tier 1 for the rest of the regular season, and a Predators Cup berth for the postseason. That could come next week if Rutherford beat Mt. Juliet, but Franklin would still have to win tonight, along with MBA beating Brentwood.

I’ll pick Franklin.

Montgomery Bell (2-0-0) vs. Brentwood (0-2-0) - 8:30 PM @ Centennial B
Both teams have started the season differently. The Big Red had to score six goals just to beat Rutherford, then had to tough out a win with a stingy Pope. Brentwood have had the opposite, being taken to the woodshed by both Franklin and Ravenwood. Unfortunately for the Bruins, they now have to face the Big Red’s top line of Lee Guy, Matthew Moore, and Trace Graham. Graham already has four goals on the season, anchored by a hat trick against Rutherford, while Moore and Guy each have two. Freshman Duke D’Alba has also been impressive early for MBA, scoring against the Rampage, and getting an assist against Pope. The Bruins will need an outstanding game from goalie Payne Fielder, along with their big guns Aidan Pustizzi, Callahan Fielder, Jack Schultz, and Trey Wilkins.

I’ll take MBA.

Ensworth-Nolensville-Lipscomb (2-0-0) vs. Independence-Ravenwood 2 (0-2-0) - 8:40 PM @ Centennial A
The Ice Tigers blasted the two all-Sumner co-ops of Hendersonville-Beech-Gallatin and Station Camp-Liberty Creek last week, beating them by a combined score of 13-0. Ensworth brought back big-time scorers Trex Hooper, Justin Nozko, and Ben Sonkin, along with top defenseman Hudson Honeybone, and it’s shown over these first two games, as Hooper and Sonkin each have three goals, and Honeybone already has six points (five of those from assists). While Ensworth have many veterans, the Eagles have been dealing with being a mostly young team. They were given a decent beating by the Outlaws on Opening Night, before losing a heartbreaker to USN on Monday. These two teams are not alike.

I’m thinking that Ensworth will win big again.
