Previewing tonight’s games

Games being broadcast by MTSN are in BOLD.

Pope Prep-MLK-GCA (1-0-0) vs. Father Ryan (1-0-0) - 7:10 PM @ Centennial A
Both teams won impressively on Monday night, with Pope grinding out a 2-1 win over Mt. Juliet-Wilson Central-Green Hill, and Father Ryan putting up a massive 5-1 win over Ravenwood. Both teams relied on goaltending, with Anthony Pellegrino making 15 saves on 16 Mt. Juliet shots, and Zach Fonnesbeck turning away 31 of 32 Ravenwood shots. This should be a goaltending battle between both teams, but I still think that Pope are the better team overall.

I’ll take the Knights in a close one.

Montgomery Bell (first game of season) vs. Rutherford Rampage (first game of season) - 7:30 PM @ Antioch-North
The Big Red bring back three of their top five scorers from last season (leading scorer Lee Guy, third-leading scorer Matthew Moore, and fifth-leading scorer Trace Graham), while having to hand diplomas to second-leading scorer Cooper Greene and fourth-leading scorer Trey Wieck, top defensemen Ed Herlitzka and Cam Kinser, as well as Alex Dube and Evan Smith. They also saw Lucas Tarquine transfer to Ensworth. This is still a pretty young MBA team, with Guy and Graeme Rutter - who last played for the Big Red in the 2021-22 season - being their only seniors. The likes of Emmett Casteel and Caleb Kirkland will look to become top scorers for the Big Red, leading the charge for the group of juniors. Goaltenders Hunter Wieck and Aiden Becker are back, which provides stability in goal for MBA. JP Dumont is back in his fourth season as head coach.

The Rampage bring back their top two scorers from last season, Eddie Maze - just a sophomore - and Justin Dickinson, now a senior. Six players moved on from their high school days: top defenseman Jacob Littleton, other top scorers Patrick Shuff, Josh Wolfe, and Cam Hawkins, top goaltender Tyler Welch, and Canaan Steed. Looking at this year’s roster, the Rampage appear to have had some underclassmen not return to the team, among them goalie Hunter Kitchens, who certainly would’ve been the #1 starter this season, and third-leading scorer Ethan Fredericks. Even goalie Alex Beck, who was Centennial’s backup last season after they picked him in the draft, seems to not be playing in GNASH this season. It looks like senior Jackson Felts will be the top goalie this season, which should serve the Rampage well. They’ve also gotten the Burnette-Vice twins - Colin and Carter - back after they didn’t play last season. They should definitely help out the scoring, especially Carter, who was the fifth-leading scorer for the team in 2021-22 when it was known as Blackman-Stewarts Creek-Smyrna. Mike Jones is back as head coach.

Lee Guy vs. Justin Dickinson will be fun. I’ll pick MBA.

Ravenwood (0-1-0) vs. Brentwood (0-1-0) - 8:15 PM @ Antioch-South
Neither team played poorly in their respective losses on Monday (Ravenwood to Father Ryan, Brentwood to Franklin), but definitely didn’t play good enough to win, as both teams played from behind the entire time. Of the two, I think Brentwood played Franklin better than Ravenwood played Father Ryan. Is this the first Battle of the Woods in history where both teams are 0-1 coming in?

I’m picking Brentwood.

Franklin (1-0-0) vs. Mt. Juliet-Wilson Central-Green Hill (0-1-0) - 8:30 PM @ Centennial B
Franklin’s brilliant victory against Brentwood on Monday is an absolute signal to the rest of the league that they are here to fight at the top of the table. MacLaine Butters looks dangerous, and Brandon Mills got on the scoresheet, too. Fitting, as they were the second-leading (Mills) and third-leading (Butters) scorers last season. They need to stay disciplined, though, as they took far too many trips to the penalty box. The team’s all-around good play made up for that, but they can’t play with that fire the entire season. Mt. Juliet, despite losing to Pope, only had four penalties on Monday. They’ll need to keep that up as they run through the Tier 1 gauntlet, but they’ll need to capitalize on their scoring chances, too.

I’m saying Franklin are 2-0 after this one.

Station Camp-Liberty Creek (0-0-1) vs. Ensworth-Nolensville-Lipscomb (1-0-0) - 8:40 PM @ Centennial A
Station Camp’s tie with USN on Monday snapped a 14-game losing streak that dated back to last October 19. Meanwhile, Ensworth walloped Hendersonville-Beech-Gallatin 6-0. I think that Station Camp are better than Hendersonville, but they’re still a pretty young team.

Ensworth is my pick here.
