MTSN GNASH Newsletter for September 28, 2023

CORRECTION FROM YESTERDAY’S NEWSLETTER: In the game preview for MBA-Rutherford in yesterday’s newsletter, I said that Josh Wolfe was one of the six Rampage players that graduated. This is incorrect. Josh is a junior on this year’s team. Brendan Heasley was one of the six Rampage seniors last season; I forgot to list him. I regret the error, and offer my apologies to Josh and Brendan.

Recapping last night’s games

Father Ryan 4, (2-0-0), Pope Prep-MLK-GCA 1 (1-1-0)
The Irish used another outstanding performance from Zach Fonnesbeck in goal to defeat the Knights, as he turned away 29 of their 30 shots. Carter Middleton scored the opening goal for the second straight game, and Jacob Boron made it 2-0 before the end of the first. In the second, two penalties within 30 seconds crippled the Knights’ hopes, as the Fighting Irish were able convert both halves of the 5-on-3, with goals from Marek McCullars and Austin Hester. Erik Kihlberg scored the Knights’ only goal in the third.

Next game for both teams:
Pope Prep-MLK-GCA: Monday vs. Montgomery Bell @ 6:45 PM - Bellevue-Crisp
Father Ryan: October 18 vs. Brentwood @ 7:30 PM - Antioch-North

Montgomery Bell 6 (1-0-0), Rutherford Rampage 4 (0-1-0)
Trace Graham had a second period hat trick to propel the Big Red to a win in their opening game of the season. Rutherford actually scored just 22 seconds into the contest, with Carter Burnette-Vice scoring first GNASH goal since January 24, 2022. Nearly five minutes later, Justin Dickinson scored the first goal of his senior season to extend the lead to 2-0. MBA got up off the mat, as freshman Duke D’Alba scored his first GNASH goal, then Matt Moore buried a breakaway tally almost two minutes later. Kyle Wolfe then scored his first GNASH goal to give the Rampage a 3-2 advantage at the first stoppage. It took just 18 seconds of the second for Graham to score the first of his three, then 2:04 later, his second gave the Big Red their first lead of the game. Eddie Maze made it 4-4 just past the halfway point of the second, only for Graham to complete his hat trick - and score the game winner - 37 seconds later. Lee Guy scored the game’s final goal in the third.

Ravenwood 6 (1-1-0), Brentwood 2 (0-2-0)
Ravenwood bounced back from Monday’s loss to Father Ryan with a dominant win over their big rivals. The Bruins were put to the sword in the first period, as the Raptors scored three goals in 34 seconds: Jack Ready made it 1-0 on a shot from the left circle. On the subsequent faceoff, the puck ended up in the Brentwood zone. Two Bruins misplayed it, allowing Liam Powell to move down the slot, and slide the puck past Payne Fielder’s outstretched left leg to make it 2-0 seven second after Ready’s tally. 27 seconds later, Keaton Moffitt deflected a shot from Bennett Nichols past the blue line. Near the end of the first, Lucas Bradey scored when a long shot from the blue line snuck through Fielder’s legs. In the second, a misplayed puck by Brentwood went towards their own blue line; Powell jumped on it, and scored his second on a breakaway. Later in the period, Raptors goaltender Brady Miller made a breakaway save on Trey Wilkins. Miller taunted Wilkins after the save, not seeing Callahan Fielder trailing him; Fielder buried the rebound from the left circle, a shorthanded tally the Bruins badly needed. Each side scored once in the third: Freshman Oliver Lutz came out of the left wing corner right to the front of the Brentwood net, and beat Payne Fielder five-hole. At this point, Fielder was pulled for Andrew Sallee. 20 second after the Lutz goal, Callahan Fielder scored his second, an amazing power play tally from the Ravenwood slot, where he laid out, and backhanded the puck past Miller. 16 seconds after Fielder’s goal, multiple panes of glass in the corner of the South Rink next to the Zamboni area were knocked onto the ice by some students. Rather than wait out the delay, head coaches Chris Orem and Mike Driscoll mutually agreed to end the game with 4:06 remaining.

Next game for both teams:
Ravenwood: Monday vs. Franklin @ 8:20 PM - Bellevue-Crisp
Brentwood: Next Wednesday vs. Montgomery Bell @ 8:30 PM - Centennial B

Franklin 6 (2-0-0), Mt. Juliet-Wilson Central-Green Hill 0 (0-2-0)
After a goalless first, Kasper Thuresson scored what turned out to be the game winner just under four minutes into the second. Quinn Lohse gave the Admirals a 2-0 lead just under three minutes later. Franklin took over the game in the third, scoring four times: Cael Lewis made it 3-0 just over two-and-a-half minutes into the final frame, followed by MacLaine Butters’s third goal of the season, then Hudson Richards’s notching his second tally of the year, and then, finally, Hank Hayes scoring his first GNASH goal with just over a minute left to bring the game to its 6-0 final.

Ensworth-Nolensville-Lipscomb 7, (2-0-0), Station Camp-Liberty Creek 0 (0-1-1)
The Ice Tigers have made themselves firm favorites to make the midseason move into Tier 1 after blowing out both all-Sumner County co-ops this week. After no scoring for nearly the first 11 minutes of the first, Ensworth suddenly exploded for 3 goals in a span of 96 seconds. Ben Sonkin scored the game’s first goal, with Hudson Honeybone getting on the board 34 seconds later. Then Trex Hooper made it 3-0 just 63 seconds after that. In the second, Ensworth scored their four remaining goals. Sonkin needed just 16 seconds to bury his second of the game. 3:29 later, Brandon Bello made it 5-0. Past the halfway point of the second period, JT Borland scored his first GNASH goal. Then with 2:15 left in the second, Logan Green scored the last goal of the game, getting on a GNASH scoresheet for the first time himself. Nolensville freshman Bingston Soundara had a 13-save shutout in net for the Ice Tigers.
